The Sapporo Snow Festival began in 1950, when a group of high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. What started as a small, local event quickly captured the hearts of locals — and eventually, the world.
The festival gained international attention during the 1972 Winter Olympics, held in Sapporo. Since then, it has grown into a large-scale celebration of snow and ice, featuring massive sculptures carved with extraordinary detail and creativity.
Today, these frozen masterpieces light up at night and depict everything from famous landmarks to pop culture icons and mythical creatures. The artistry, paired with Sapporo’s snowy charm, continues to draw millions of visitors every year, making it one of the most magical winter events in the world.

    1) Odori Site (Main Site)

This is the heart of the festival — and the biggest attraction. Stretching across 11 city blocks, the Odori Site is famous for its massive snow and ice sculptures, with some towering up to 15 metres tall and spanning over 25 metres wide!
One of the highlights here is the International Snow Sculpture Contest, held at 11-chome. Artists from around the world compete live — and visitors can watch the sculptors in action during the event!
After sunset, the entire site transforms into a magical winter scene — all the sculptures are lit up nightly until 10 PM, creating a spectacular photo opportunity.

How to get to Tsudome Site: Take the Toho Line from JR Sapporo Station and alight at Sakae Station.

    3) Susukino Site

Set in Sapporo’s vibrant nightlife district, the Susukino Site is known for its stunning ice sculptures and lively atmosphere. This site hosts its own Ice Sculpture Contest, drawing incredible entries that are on full display throughout the event.
At night, the sculptures are illuminated to magical effect. You’ll also find an ice bar where you can sip drinks surrounded by glowing ice — a truly unique experience!
