Taipei: Karenko Kitchen Indigenous Cuisine Experience Kitchen

Sofia was very generous in sharing her knowledge of the ingredients, how they are grown, harvested and prepared. She provided good guidance during the class, and she also shared a lot about aboriginal customs, experiences and history. The food was delicious. An experience worth every cent, would attend another class in future.

Fun experience with Sofia and being able to learn more about their culture and lifestyle including how, when or where the plants were harvested. I also found a lot of small similarities with Borneon food which made it all the more amazing.

It was an amazing and unique culinary lesson experience! That morning, Sofia had just purchased unique local ingredients fresh from Hualien. They were all things I had never seen before. She tested me on a few to see if I recognized them, and it turned out I couldn't name more than half of them... LOL. Sofia explained Taiwan's indigenous culture, introducing the relationship between indigenous food culture and Taiwanese history. The most interesting part was that the menu for that day's class was determined by the suitable ingredients available that morning, meaning the content and dishes for each class might be different! Sofia was also very talkative and friendly. I'm an extremely introverted person, but I did feel welcomed at her place. Besides indigenous culture and food, I also chatted with her a lot about her travels and her feelings about life experiences. From her story, I gained the courage to pursue my dream. I am very grateful to Sofia for the wonderful afternoon she thoughtfully gave me. I hope to visit Hualien next time and experience a different Jialan Ke Kitchen! =)

There is a conflicting beauty in cooking Aboriginal cuisine in an old Shanghai-style house. It was my first time trying a handmade course and I found it very interesting. Thank you Sofia for her patient teaching.
