New Pokémon Manhole Covers Have Hit The Streets Of Hokkaido: Catch Close To 200 Of Them Across Japan!

If you've ever visited Japan, you would have probably noticed their unique, adorable manhole covers that come in various different designs and colours. It's impressive how a country would put so much work into adding an artistic flair to something that's just placed on the street, easily overlooked and stepped over.

Japan's artistic manhole covers are delightful gems scattered all over the country. They often include symbols and designs specific to a certain area or town, such as landmarks, mascots, flora and fauna, and more! For fans of Pokémon, get ready to keep your eyes on the ground the next time you're in Japan! In 2018, Japan started installing a series of Pokémon manholes (also known as Poké Lids or Pokéfuta) in the country - close to 200 of them have since been placed in regions and cities across Japan such as Kagoshima, Hokkaido, Kyoto, Nara, Okinawa, Tokyo, and Miyazaki.

To celebrate the arrival of Poké Lids in Tokyo back in 2020, The Pokémon Company even released an official guide detailing where these manhole covers can be found across the nation. Travellers can refer to the guide to locate Poké Lids easily while exploring Japan - the website also implies that dozens of new Poké Lids are scheduled to be installed across the country in the near future!

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the installation of Poké Lids across Japan hasn't slowed down in 2021. In the past few months, brand-new Pokéfuta were unveiled in Miyazaki, Shiga, and Hokkaido.

Just like the existing ones, the new lids pay homage to the cities they are being installed in, with the ones in Hokkaido showcasing the diverse landscapes of the prefecture and the ones in Miyazaki featuring palm trees and beaches as a reflection of the sunny, semi-tropical prefecture. 

Where are you excited to fly to once the pandemic is over? According to Malaysia's National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, the Malaysian government is currently in talks with other countries on allowing international travel for those who are fully vaccinated in the near future.
