Original Onigawara Making Experience in Kyoto
In this experience, we will explore the history of Kawara—the traditional roof tiles of Japan. Typically featuring a design with the fearless faces of ogres and gargoyles, these carved tiles found at the ends of the main roof ridge have been protecting the roofs of Japanese buildings from evil, and rainwater, since ancient times. I will teach you how to make a small, simple Onigawara tile with a demon face. After making the Onigawara, I will fire the Onigawara tile in a kiln at the factory. Japan tile production has modernized over the years, but wouldn't you like to make an ogre tile the way it did in the past?
What to expect
To celebrate our opening, we are currently offering a special discount price.
We accept groups of 1-35 people. For groups that more than 5 people, the location will change.
Originally, making Onigawara is difficult. However, by our own developed procedure, even children and people with clumsy hands can make an ONI.
Experience in making an original demon from scratch, like no other.

Reviews
Amazing experience! This workshop was the highlight of our stay in Kyoto. Instructor has great English and explained everything perfectly, step by step. He is also very kind and patient and gives you space to be creative and create your onigawara to your liking.
My partner and I had so much fun in this class. Youya is an absolutely amazing teacher and is awesome at what he does. We had no idea what we were doing but Youya was really patient with us and guided us through each step and detail. I would 100% recommend this to everyone and anyone. No prior experience required.
Sensei was very nice and hands on. Really enjoyed it! It was hard but since sensei is very helpful, we follwed his steps, our work looked so nice! We really enjoyed it!
A great experience as soon as we arrived in Japan. Yuya-san welcomed us into his workshop and explained each step, even if we don't speak Japanese/English very well, everything is understandable. The clay manipulation is very relaxing and we enjoyed chatting with Yuya-san. I highly recommend!!! PS: A little moment of incomprehension for the place, maybe a translation error. "will be picked up at the station on the same day" Klook should specify that the meeting is not at the station but at a specific location. Yuya-san was understanding of our delay, but we would have liked to be on time.
This was a very fun and unique way to commemorate our time in Kyoto. Yuya was a great host and teacher, and has many impressive works in his studio. I highly, highly recommend this experience! Do note that the cost is varies by date and does not include shipping (~2500 yen per onigawara).
we really loved our host. he was very patient with our fumbling attempts. a wonderful quiet way to spend the afternoon. all the family agreed that it was one of favorite activities in Kyoto so far!
this is a great class with an excellent teacher and I highly recommend this for traveling artists. Be aware that you will need to bring 4,000Y as well to help cover shipping.
this was so fun. the class was informative and easy to follow. the instructor spoke good English and is very good at making these characters.
Such an incredible experience to try and make your own onigawara figures. The guide was good at English and nice to have a long conversation with.
