【Our Songs, Our Era】

This land has been telling stories through songs for over a hundred years, once sweeping across the Chinese-speaking world and influencing billions of lives. Whether in an authoritarian era or today's open-minded society, these musicians and these songs have transcended generations and time, breaking through national borders and cities, leaving vivid memories in everyone's lives. Whether it's about everyday life or expressing grand emotions; whether you're a Rocker or a rebel, whether you're a fresh and innocent soul or a dreamer, everyone must have a song that belongs to them in their heart, and they will surely find their own story here.

Let's open our ears and eyes, enter the temple of pop music together, listen carefully to the songs of this island, and experience a rich musical journey.

Prologue: Chords of Memory

Music has always been by our side, with each song witnessing the turmoil of eras and the change of regimes. In the hearts of every generation, there is a song that belongs to them.

Taipei Circle

In the early days, folk songs could only be passed down by word of mouth; in the 1930s, with the drop of a needle and the sound of music, Taiwan had its first pop song. From the "Gezaiben" (songbooks) of the Japanese colonial period to radios, phonographs, and then street performances and record store "records" and tapes, Taipei Circle undoubtedly witnessed the early development of Taiwanese pop music and enriched the ears of several generations.

Era Appliance Store

From pocket-sized transistor radios, black and white to color televisions, to portable cassette recorders, and of course, personal cassette players... a small display window of an appliance store also jointly witnessed the musical era we experienced.

Taipei Theater (The Story of Movie Theme Songs)

“Peach Blossom Weeping Blood” in 1932 was one of Taiwan’s earliest pop songs and the theme song of the movie of the same name. Since then, pop music and the film and television industry have had a deep connection. The heyday of the film industry was also the best time for the record industry, leaving countless classic works, such as: “A Red Egg,” “Waiting for Spring Breeze,” and “Harbor City Night Rain,” which are popular songs.

Train, Train

With the development of modernization and urbanization, trains carried young people leaving their hometowns to pursue their dreams in distant places. This train carried full dreams and the melancholy of leaving home. The rhythm of the songs accompanied this island from agricultural to industrial and then to the modern society dominated by the service industry.

Sing Your Own Songs (Folk Song Era)

There was once an era when young people, with a guitar, a small songbook, and a portable cassette recorder, recorded demos, wrote their own songs, and sang them themselves. These songs revealed a strong literary sentiment, often incorporating poetry into their lyrics, giving pop music more literary depth and laying a good foundation for future pop music.

The Spiritual World of Young People

The political and social atmosphere in Taiwan gradually relaxed in the 1980s, giving birth to many songs with attitude, echoing the frustrations and anxieties of generations of young people, and singing about their dreams and innocence. Every word and phrase revealed their youthful passion.

In life, there is always a song that will sing about your joys and sorrows, hesitations and uncertainties, and all the unspoken feelings when you are in love. When a familiar song plays, who will you think of? Or your past self?

The Birth of a Record

The completion of an album, from creation, arrangement, recording, vocal performance, post-production to visual design, marketing, and promotion, requires professional workers to collaborate in every aspect. Let’s see how an album is produced.

The Charm of Music (Diversity and Inclusiveness of Taiwanese Music)

Taiwan, this land, integrates rich and diverse cultures. In addition to mother-tongue songs in Taiwanese, Hakka, indigenous languages, and new immigrant languages, Chinese singers from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and other places also regard Taiwan as the most important base for pop music. Because of this inclusive spirit, it is filled with various music styles such as lyrical, rock, dance, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic music.

Live Music

In the 1990s, underground bands performed in humble pubs, and singer-songwriters also began to perform in Live Houses. Later, these music performance spaces, once labeled as "underground" and "marginal," gradually evolved into creative bases for diverse music cultures. In recent years, various music festivals have attracted tens of thousands of listeners, connecting like-minded musicians. To this day, "independent music" has become the "mainstream" in the hearts of young people.

"HIP-HOP Event_Taiwan Hip-Hop Exhibition Area"

The newly launched hip-hop exhibition area invited “Principal” Da Zhi and Zhou Youkai, the producer of “The Rappers,” to serve as curatorial consultants. They interviewed cross-generational rap stars such as Huang Li-cheng, MC HotDog, Miss Ko, Naughty by Nature MJ 116, Kumachan, and A-Kua-Mian, to talk about the interaction between different generations and hip-hop music from their perspectives, and experience the purest raw hip-hop.

The Scene of Life (Concert Experience Area)

The team uses large four-sided projections, combined with carefully planned stage lighting and lasers, to recreate the shock of a live concert with the latest technology. Open your ears and eyes, and enjoy this musical feast!

• Exhibition Hours: Daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Closed on Mondays, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and August 25-29). Last admission at 4:30 PM.
• Exhibition Location: Taipei Music Center Cultural Hall (No. 99, Section 7, Zhongxiao East Road, Nangang District, Taipei City)

• Full Price: NT$350 (General admission)
• Senior Ticket: NT$175 (Seniors aged 65 and above, must present original ID, limit 1 ticket per ID)
• Group Ticket: NT$315 (Groups of 20 or more, by reservation)
• Concession Ticket: NT$320 (Students, residents of Nangang and Neihu Districts, must present original ID, limit 1 ticket per ID)
• Free Admission: Children aged 6 and under, with original ID. Adults must purchase a ticket to accompany them; persons with disabilities and one essential companion, with original ID.
• From now until January 31, 2025, visitors holding a ticket (or e-ticket) for a performance at the Taipei Music Center "Concert Hall" or "LiveHouse D" can purchase a ticket for the "Sing Our Songs: The Story of Pop Music" exhibition at the Cultural Hall's first-floor service counter on the "day of the performance" for a special promotional price of NT$250, limited to one ticket per person.
