Reviews
Scenic ride through a dreamy tunnel of mountains and river views. Seats were comfortable and the slow pace made it perfect for photos. Easy redemption and well organised boarding. A relaxing highlight of my Kyoto trip, worth the price.
very convenient. booked the train from Saga to Kameoka. the saga station is just beside the JR saga arashiyama station, but you need abt a 1min speed walk to get over. we booked car 5 which was open (no windows, but has a shelter) and the view was amazing! (recommend booking odd seats and facing front for better view; although both sides have their good views). trains are every hour (.02 there, and .30 return), so we took the 10.02-10.25 train. spent an hour at Kameoka, then took the 11.30 train and alighted at Arashiyama (instead of saga) to walk thru the bamboo forest. very lovely area to explore!!!
We rode the Sagano Romantic Train before taking the Hozugawa River boat, which was a truly interesting experience. The beautiful train with views of the river alongside it was absolutely stunning. Highly recommended if you're visiting Kyoto.
Buying tickets online is very convenient; you can board the scenic train directly with a QR code, no need to exchange for a physical ticket. However, we mistakenly thought the scenic train departure point was near JR Kameoka Station. After getting off at Kameoka Station and not finding the train, we asked a staff member and learned we needed to alight at JR Umahori Station. So, we re-entered the gate and took one more stop to Umahori Station, then walked to the scenic train's Kameoka Station. We almost missed the train. The scenery along the scenic train route is beautiful. The disembarkation point is right at the entrance to the bamboo forest, which is very convenient. The bamboo forest is stunning and a great spot for photos.
So beautiful and absolutely a must if you’re stopping by. The biggest issue was that it’s almost too popular with many passengers that end up obstructing the view and taking away from what would be a very romantic atmosphere.
Purchasing through Klook is very convenient. You can buy in advance and receive an order confirmation message when official sales begin. I was also lucky enough to get the Royal Carriage. It's also easy to change seats or carriages later on. You don't need to exchange tickets on-site; just open the app and scan the barcode when you exit. Highly recommended. This little train is worth riding.
Buying tickets on Klook is really convenient, and I even managed to get tickets for the open-air car No. 5. The Arashiyama Scenic Railway experience was excellent.
Our experience with the Sagano Romantic Train was very pleasant overall, with the Klook booking process being smooth and straightforward, offering instant confirmation and easy ticket usage. The pricing is reasonable for the scenic journey it offers, making it a good value experience. The facilities on the train are simple but well-maintained, and the seating is comfortable enough for the duration. Staff were organized and managed boarding efficiently. The highlight is the beautiful natural scenery along the route, especially during seasonal changes like autumn or spring, making the ride very relaxing and enjoyable. Overall, a worthwhile experience for those looking to enjoy Kyoto’s scenic side.
I visited Arashiyama in January, but the Sagano Scenic Railway wasn't running then. Since the route is highly recommended online, I made sure to reserve tickets this time around... After purchasing the tickets, you need to go to the official website to select your seats. I chose car number 5, the "The Rich" car. If you want a better view of the scenery, you have to choose even-numbered seats... The ride lasts about 20 minutes, and the scenery is actually quite beautiful. It's perfect for first-time visitors to Arashiyama.
The Arashiyama Scenic Railway is a great experience year-round, with beautiful train cars and stunning scenery. It's a must-do activity when visiting Arashiyama. Autumn is especially recommended, as you can see many beautiful maple leaves.
