JR Kyushu Fukuoka Wide Area Mobile Pass

I used this pass to visit Kurume and Kokura. I'd been to Shimonoseki twice before, so I skipped it this time. Kurume wasn't actually in my plans, but a train happened to arrive, so I just hopped on for a spontaneous trip, searched online, and ended up admiring the ancient Buddha statue. For reference, you can take bus 31 or 35 from Kurume Station (310 yen) and walk 5-10 minutes to get there. The next day, I went to Kokura, ate burdock udon, and shopped at 2nd Street, haha. Fukuoka is too expensive for me, so Kokura has more affordable brands. I especially found some great deals at Niko and… because their items are pretty and vintage is cheap. If Fukuoka felt like a wall, you can shop for various things in Kokura, haha. When you're on the train, they'll come to check your ticket, so you need to show it on your phone. On the Sonic train, cars 4-7 are non-reserved seats.

Mobile JR pass is very convenient to use. Just show the phone to the train officer. no more paper pass. however sometimes the officer at the gate is busy. may need to wait in line for a while. The price for 2 days ¥3500 is a good deal. Highly recommend

Highly recommended if you plan a two-day trip in from Fukuoka to KitaKyushu area! I found it very convenient and very value for money. It is easy to use but just make sure you have internet connection.

These trains are full of character, making the journey itself a captivating experience. Whether for a relaxing getaway or an entertaining trip, these trains will take you on a serene journey through magnificent scenery and natural landscapes, which are the very soul of Kyushu. True to its name, the "Sonic" is an intercity express (URBAN LINER) that connects different cities in eastern Kyushu. The Sonic features both the white 885 series and the metallic blue 883 series, and it is also JR Kyushu's proud tilting train. Tilting trains reduce centrifugal force when cornering, not only increasing speed but also enhancing ride comfort. Come and experience this comfort for yourself!

Using the JR Fukuoka Wide Pass from Hakata Station, I took a train for about 1.5 hours to Kokura Castle in Kitakyushu. Along the way, the train passed through small villages with mountains and fields, similar to Taitung, before arriving at Kokura Station. Upon exiting the station, I was greeted by the bustling scene of a large city. After a short walk past the art museum, I reached the historic Kokura Castle and Yasaka Shrine. This Hyakudoishi (hundred-time stone) marks the starting point for visiting the main hall, signifying that one must visit and return a hundred times for a complete pilgrimage. It has decorations resembling abacus beads. Using the electronic rail pass is very convenient; you only need to show the screen on your phone to the station staff. However, before using it for the first time, you need to click a link to activate it online, and then a screen showing accumulated usage time will appear.

If you're going to Karatsu, make sure to get off at Karatsu Station, not Nishi-Karatsu Station, as there are no staff there. It's convenient to go to Mojiko and the Yobuko Morning Market, but be aware that on weekends, the road to Yobuko Morning Market can get congested with many cars. If possible, try to go on a weekday and go early, as some vendors, like those selling sea urchins, will leave once they sell out. If you plan to take several Showa Bus rides, you can download the MyRoute app from the Japanese App Store to buy bus tickets (only the two-day pass includes the highway Showa Bus). If the weather is good, it's highly recommended to take a boat from the pier to see Nanatsugama; the boat will even enter the cave entrance, which is amazing. The sushi at Karato Market in Shimonoseki, near Mojiko, is incredibly delicious and fresh. The baked curry rice is also very tasty, with a runny egg and cheese, making it very fragrant.

It's very easy and comfortable to use. And, it was very cheap — I was able to visit Karatsu in Saga and Mojiko in Kitakyushu using this mobile pass. I will definitely avail on this again on my return to Fukuoka.
