I highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in forging knives. It will be a cherished memory, both tangible and intangible, for a lifetime! 🔨 Instructor/Communication: No need to worry if you don't speak Japanese. The instructor will use translation software to explain and communicate throughout the entire process, ensuring you understand the knife-forging steps. The instructor is very friendly and professional, providing great emotional support, so you not only learn a lot but also feel a strong sense of accomplishment. 🔨 Experience: You might notice that the knife shape we made is different from other visitors'. This is because we had previously emailed the instructor to discuss our desired knife shape (we planned to make the handle ourselves later). The instructor confirmed it was fine and prepared a customized knife blank for us on the day of the experience. They also added steps like creating blade patterns, allowing us to participate in the complete process of crafting the knife we envisioned step by step. We were incredibly moved by the experience. (The additional activities mentioned above were agreed upon with the instructor for an extra charge). 🔨 Time: Since there were two of us and we had an additional paid itinerary, we stayed for about 7 hours (including breaks). The instructor handles one group at a time before moving on to the next, so if there are multiple people in your group, you should estimate that the time required might be a bit longer than what is stated on the website.
Hospitality and kindness are two things that make the Japanese people great; the swordsmith at Hayamitsu is not only a master at his swords, he is a master of humanity. I showed up late due to being lost, but he nevertheless showed me a craft I've only seen portrayed in the movies, doing it with a patience I was so grateful for. If you're curious about making Japanese swords, please check this out. You won't regret it. :)
This was the best thing I did on my trip to Japan. The location is a very beautiful town, away from the busy cities. The sword maker is one of the few official sword makers in Japan. He showed us how the steel is forged to make Japanese swords, then provided steel molds for us to make our own knives, patiently teaching us at each step. What better souvenir to take home than something you made with your own hands?
You owe it to yourself to book this experience. We were a party of three, and he made us all feel included in the experience. You'll learn a lot and do a lot as part of making your own knife. While you won't be making your own billet (it's not reasonable considering the time restraints), you will be making your knife and being very involved in the process, from heating the metal and shaping it with a hammer to filing and polishing it. Hayamitsu-sensei is patient, caring, helpful, and encouraging all the way through. A thorough, tier 1 experience. Also, my 10-year-old child also managed to make his own knife with lots of guidance.
An awesome experience for both myself and Patrick, the organisers were patient with our English, and made us feel special. The venue is a little bit out of the way but with the help of some friendly locals and a taxi we got there no problem! Not the cheapest experience but was one of the most special and ethnic we have done in Japan!
This experience was absolutely amazing. We were 40 minutes early and he was so kind and welcoming and jumped right in. He was very kind and patient and funny. He went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. We learned so much about Japanese sword making and making our own knives was just a bonus. Would absolutely do this again whenever I make it back to Japan.
An absolutely amazing experience that we cannot recommend enough. An absolute highlight of our entire trip thanks to such an informative and engaging host and what a brilliant souvenir. Do yourself a favour and do not miss this opportunity
