Attractions along the way: Gather early in the morning by the Opera Fountain and board a double-decker bus. The first stop is Dürnstein, a small town along the Wachau Valley. Stroll towards the monastery with its blue spire, and experience the tranquil and charming riverside scenery. Afterwards, we will take a coach to the pier and switch to a Danube ferry, sailing all the way to Melk Abbey. The scenery on both banks along the way is picturesque and truly breathtaking.
I chose two tours, Danube Valley + Hallstatt, which were more cost-effective. They only included round-trip bus transportation and a boat trip, costing a thousand dollars per tour, without other admission fees. I would only join if I couldn't get there by myself. However, the tour bus was comfortable, and there was enough free time, so I was quite satisfied.
The tour guide resembled an old English gentleman, very elegant, knowledgeable, and familiar with historical anecdotes. The first small town was Dürnstein, but unfortunately, due to traffic jams in Vienna, we only had 20 minutes to explore upon arrival. We rushed to the blue-spired church for a quick photo before having to return to the bus, unable to properly explore the town. Then we departed for Spits pier to take a Danube River boat trip, which lasted about 90 minutes. The sun was quite strong, so it's advisable to bring sunglasses or a hat, or sit in the lower deck. We stayed in Melk for almost three hours, but it wasn't as beautiful as Dürnstein. Three hours felt a bit long; perhaps one would need to enter the abbey for a tour to avoid boredom, but entering the abbey incurs an additional fee. The square inside the abbey is free to visit.
Dürnstein is a municipality on the Danube River, known for its picturesque scenery and beautiful architecture. After boarding a cruise from Spitz to explore the Wachau Valley, the journey concludes with a coach ride to Melk Abbey, passing through a stunningly expansive valley along the way.
The itinerary's time allocation is reasonable; it doesn't feel rushed or like time is being wasted. I appreciate the flexibility of the itinerary allowing for dining on board or at a restaurant upon arrival at the destination. The multilingual commentary is thoughtfully provided, but it could be tailored to the needs of the passengers on the day. A small suggestion: upon arriving at Melk Abbey, it would be helpful to first explain which parts of the garden are worth exploring.
The overall itinerary was not very cost-effective; if it weren't for the hassle of transportation, I might not have chosen it. Initially, we only had 30 minutes to walk around the historic town, which felt rushed. Afterwards, the 90-minute boat ride from Spitz was quite boring. Upon arriving in Melk, we were largely left to explore on our own, and there was an additional €14 fee to join the Abbey Tour. After the tour, there was essentially no time left to see other parts of the town. It might be more relaxing to visit on your own. The tour guide explained things throughout the journey on the bus and was very kind, but the itinerary itself was rather ordinary and expensive.
After gathering, we enjoyed the Danube River scenery from the bus, and the views were even better from the cruise ship. Finally, we explored the charming town of Melk, which is very unique and well worth a visit.
Regarding the Hallstatt day tour, the guide was very kind and attentive to the feelings of the travelers. They also provided us with different ways to explore Hallstatt, which I found very convenient, and we had enough time to walk around Hallstatt~
