Japan was just hit by a typhoon heading straight for the Izu Peninsula. I could only use my 2.5-day pass, rushing back to Tokyo by JR on the afternoon of the third day. Fortunately, the JR lines really were suspended the next day and over 300 flights were cancelled; the weather changed drastically. On the first day of my trip, I issued my tickets at the Shinkansen counter inside Atami JR Station—please note that this can only be done inside the JR station. On the first day, I visited local attractions around Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture, taking a ferry to Toi Port (which takes about 90 minutes), then a bus to Shuzenji Station, and finally transferring to the Izuhakone Railway to Mishima. On the second day, I went to Gotemba Outlets and took the JR to Numazu for dinner in the evening. On the third day, I took a Fujikyu bus to Oshino Hakkai. Because of the rain, the water was murky, but walking in the light rain at the foot of Mount Fuji offered fresh air and a cool feeling. I had previously bought this pass to go to Lake Kawaguchi, so I didn't plan to go again this time. Overall, this 3-day pass is an incredible value.
Our seamless and highly cost-effective 3-day journey with this pass included: Day 1: Started using the pass right from JR Matsuda Station, which connects perfectly if you take the Odakyu Line Rapid-Express up from Shinjuku. From there, we headed to Gotemba and visited the beautiful Oshino Hakkai village. The local bus fares to Oshino Hakkai alone usually cost over 1,000 JPY per trip, but it was fully covered! We then headed to our accommodation near Fuji Station. Day 2: Explored around the scenic Fujinomiya area and traveled further to visit the famous Mishima Skywalk. Day 3: We took a round-trip cruise on the Suruga Bay Ferry. Even though it was raining continuously and we couldn't disembark to sightsee, the round-trip ferry ride itself normally costs 6,000 JPY in total, making the pass instantly worth it! Afterward, we used the pass to travel smoothly to our next stay in Hamamatsu. This pass saved us a massive amount of transit budget and covered trains, buses, and even a large ferry.
This is a pass for those who plan to travel around Shizuoka and the areas surrounding Mount Fuji, and who have ample time and are not in a hurry, as it is only valid for local trains. It offers great value, allowing you to enjoy free views of Mount Fuji, free bus rides to Kawaguchiko, and free bus rides in Hamamatsu.
This time, I took my family and purchased the Fuji & Shizuoka Area Tourist Pass Mini. We visited Nihondaira Yume Terrace, Oshino Hakkai, Shimo-Yoshida Station, Arakurayama Sengen Park, Miho no Matsubara in Shimizu, and took a cruise from Shimizu Port. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Shizuoka.
From Atami, take the train to Izu; from Izu, go to Mishima and then take a bus to Mishima Skywalk; from Shizuoka, take the train to Shimizu Fish Market; from Numazu, take a bus to Numazu Port Seafood Market, and so on. A single pass allows you to travel all over Shizuoka Prefecture, saving on transportation costs and time, which is very convenient and highly recommended.
The mini pass covers a wide range (including buses and JR, but note that Kintetsu is not included). It's also very convenient for getting to Miho no Matsubara, but be sure to check the schedule as some stations don't have many services. If you want to see Mount Fuji, the earlier the better, as visibility will be higher.
Using this pass, I visited Izu Panorama Park and the Skywalk suspension bridge in Mishima by limited express train and bus; Fujinomiya <> Shibazakura Festival, Makaino Farm, and Shiraito Falls. However, please note that some buses are not included, and neither is Shizuoka. When boarding, take a numbered ticket, and when alighting, just show the pass to the driver, which is very convenient. However, please note that it cannot be exchanged at the airport, and even at Tokyo Station, it took some searching to find the exchange point.
This pass is suitable for those who want to see Mount Fuji from various viewpoints, including Fujinomiya, Kawaguchiko, and Shimizu. It can be used on JR trains, buses, and boats.
Shizuoka is a very tranquil scenic area. On a clear day, you can see Mount Fuji from all around.
You can use the JR Pass to take boats, buses, and non-JR trains to tourist attractions, saving a lot on transportation costs. Highly recommended.
