The process for folding and dyeing the fabric is amazing. The shop is spacious and there is a museum on the second floor that explains the history and tools that were used. This is a family owned business. They are very friendly and speak English. Also, across the street on the main road is Nijo Castle (a massive structure) with gardens and sightseeing spots. It is similar to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. If you are visiting this place, which I highly recommend, then check out the castle as well. I am grateful and glad that I experienced this place and got to meet the son, father, and grandfather. They are very kind. I am definitely coming back again.
An unforgettable experience... something you shouldn't miss... an amazing art form that is slowly disappearing... the class is well worth the time and money... and the scarf you get to take home is simply beautiful... I cannot recommend this enough.
10/10 would go again. The museum director is amazing and the language barrier wasn't an issue with the gesticulation and his enthusiasm. The class was so nice and stress free, with such an easy to learn process. The museum truly shows how much Shibori is an amazing art technique with immeasurable skill involved.
One of the best things we did in Kyoto! I would highly recommend this to anyone in the area - the instructors were helpful and explained things well. Afterwards you are able to go into the upstairs museum and learn more about the history of Shibori which I also recommend. We did did this class first thing in the morning, then walked just a few minutes to Nijo-Jo Castle - so if you are planning to visit the castle while your in Kyoto, this would be a great addition to that!
Such a fun class to take! The instructors and staff are so nice, vibrant and friendly! They are so passionate about teaching the history of shibori. The museum and shop have been in the family for three generations, it’s beautiful. The museum walk through is a visual delight and so informing of the painstaking work that goes into the detail of this art. 110% recommend this, can’t say enough great things about it! :D
The booking worked out perfectly, and we were expected on site. For the two of us, an instructor was available who could communicate well with us in English. All steps were well explained and supervised. We were warned about possible burns when dipping into the hot dyes and were also supervised during the work. The result turned out great. The two scarves were ironed and handed over to us in clear film packaging at the end. We enjoyed the course and now have a handmade souvenir from Japan.
This was an incredible experience in Kyoto! The instructors provide clear, enthusiastic instruction, allowing you to pick between one of several shibori techniques to create your piece. It was a friendly, intimate atmosphere that is sure to be a highlight of your Kyoto trip (especially if you're a fiber artist or crafting fan). I must also shout out the special "opening ceremony" after the dye is complete - where you can shoot a video of unfolding your masterpiece. The artisans and staff have created a truly special experience here. The museum exhibitions upstairs are worth a visit too! The exhibit offers an English language video explaining the techniques of traditional shibori art, and beautiful masterworks of each technique on display. Don't hesitate, book this today!
It was just a fantastic experience!! The teachers are very nice, they speak very good English, they help you a lot to make your artwork!! The exhibition is beautiful, amazing pieces!! I am very thankful that I participated in this workshop, thank you so much!! ❤️
