It's very easy to buy boat tickets through the app, and it's slightly cheaper than at the counter. The place is beautiful. We went during autumn, and there were ducks that you could feed. It's amazing that one boatman can row for up to 50 people. On the way back, they even sang live for us. Highly recommended!
It was very easy to redeem the ticket by showing the QR code at the ticket window. It's slightly cheaper to get it online though Klook than to buy it directly from the ticket counter at the boat pier. Since there was no fix time slot for the ticket, you can simply wait for the next boat if you miss one. The flat-bottomed boats are open-topped and completely exposed to the weather, so remember to bring a hat and sunglasses. Ladies are not advised to wear skirts as some boats, like the one I was on, had seats on the floor.
better than expected boat ride in deep winter! Boats are fully sheltered so not cold, but duck feed to feed the hungry ducks in the river. the quiet snowy scene made for a very relaxing tour. boatman (lady in our case) will explain highlights with pamphlet. get off for a 20min walk and try yr luck throwing auspicious disks into a hole in rock wall. our boat lady sang the geibi song upon return ride. she was very good! check train timing to and from Ichinoseki. not frequent so plan ahead!
great tour! very relaxing and worth if u want to look at nature! our tour guide also sang for us as part of the tour and it was pretty mesmerising. highly recommended! beautiful pictures speak for themselves.
In the transition from autumn to winter, the boats are equipped with windproof covers for warmth. You can buy feed to give to the ducklings, and they are adorable as they paddle hard, wanting to eat! The tour guide on the boat is very dedicated, introducing the sights and speaking various languages, which is very friendly. At the destination, you can buy engraved wooden pieces (like chess pieces) and throw them into the longan tree to make your wishes come true! "Ni" (猊) means lion, and this place is called Geibikei (猊鼻渓) because one of its scenic spots resembles a lion's nose. It's one of Japan's top 100 scenic spots and well worth a visit.
The boat trip experience at Geibikei Gorge in Iwate Prefecture was truly unforgettable, a slow-paced journey that allowed for a deep appreciation of nature's charm. Gliding along the clear, calm stream in a flat-bottomed boat propelled by a boatman with a long pole, the towering cliffs on both banks and the ever-changing scenery through the seasons were captivating. During the journey, the boatman not only navigated the boat but also introduced the topography and legends of Geibikei Gorge, and even sang traditional folk songs on the spot, adding a rich local cultural atmosphere. The most interesting part of the trip was the ritual of making a wish by throwing a 'lucky stone' into a hole, which added an interactive and ceremonial touch to the journey. The overall itinerary was quiet and leisurely, making it perfect for travelers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and meticulously enjoy Japan's natural landscapes. It is a highly recommended experience when visiting Iwate.
It was a long holiday in Japan, and the queue for purchasing boat tickets on-site was very long. However, by booking through Klook, we only needed to pick up our tickets at the group ticket counter, completely avoiding the queue. This saved us time and was convenient, and the price was even slightly cheaper than buying on-site. The scenery of Geibikei Gorge was indeed breathtaking. The entire boat tour experience included a 30-minute boat ride each way (to and from), with about 20 minutes in between to disembark, stroll, and take photos. Additionally, for just 100 yen, you could buy a bag of fish food to feed not only the fish but also the ducks, which was a fun experience. However, the only drawback was that it started raining just as we arrived, and the boatman thoughtfully installed a rain cover on the boat. While this reflected the meticulous service of the Japanese, it obstructed most of the view, affecting our enjoyment of the scenery. What was even more unfortunate was that the rain stopped about ten minutes after the boat departed, and subsequent boats had already removed their rain covers. So, I have a small suggestion: if you encounter a brief shower, it might be worth waiting a little longer before boarding to avoid impacting your viewing experience.
