Qimei Island, located in the southern part of Taiwan's Penghu Archipelago, is a famous outlying island of Penghu County, renowned for its beautiful natural scenery and rich historical culture. Although small in area, Qimei Island boasts abundant tourism resources, especially its unique stone weir landscapes, magnificent coastline, and numerous legendary stories, making it a beloved destination for tourists in the Penghu Archipelago. Among them, one of the most famous attractions is the "Twin-Hearts Stone Weir." This ancient fishing tool, with its double-heart shape, has become a symbol of love, attracting countless visitors for photo opportunities. In addition to the stone weir, Qimei Island also features the majestic Jinlong Pagoda, the natural wonder of Little Taiwan, and the Tomb of the Seven Beauties, which preserves the local history and culture. Every attraction leaves a lasting impression. Furthermore, the fishing village life on Qimei Island is very simple and authentic; local residents make a living from fishing, and the harbor scenes and culinary experiences are also an unmissable part of the visit. Upon my first visit to Qimei Island, I was immediately captivated by the island's tranquil atmosphere and magnificent natural landscapes. Starting with the Twin-Hearts Stone Weir, the two interconnected heart-shaped stone weirs looked exceptionally romantic against the blue sky and sea. At low tide, the shape of the stone weir was even more clearly visible, truly an excellent spot for taking photos. Moreover, the natural rock formation of Little Taiwan, resembling the main island of Taiwan, filled me with awe at the wonders of nature's craftsmanship. The Tomb of the Seven Beauties allowed me to deeply appreciate the history and legends behind this island, and to feel the local residents' respect and remembrance for their ancestors.
This was a fantastic island-hopping tour. Both islands are definitely worth exploring by scooter. Initially, I was worried about not having enough time and having to frantically search for attractions on Google, but both islands have well-planned routes for visitors to follow in order to see all the sights, so the time felt quite ample. The scooters were also fully fueled, so there was no need to look for a gas station. Midway through, we also ate at a restaurant called "Station Master's Squid Rice Noodles," and you could truly feel the owner's immense passion. The only minor drawbacks were that you really need to be careful when choosing a scooter; we encountered one with a wobbly handlebar, which felt quite dangerous. Also, the final "Tongpan Island cruise" wasn't clearly explained, and we weren't sure if we even passed by it, so after leaving Wang'an Island, it felt like we just headed straight back to Magong Port.
The Qimei Wang'an ferry ride was comfortable, with no major winds or waves. The staff also provided explanations and slowed down when passing by Tongpan Island, allowing us to take photos. The scooter rental service on Wang'an Island was good (I made a mistake, and a small incident occurred, but the staff were happy to help resolve it). Scooter rental on Qimei Island also went smoothly, but when returning the scooter, one staff member had a sour face and slammed the scooter seat cover, which made me feel the service was poor. Therefore, I'm deducting one star from the service satisfaction.
We went to the most amazing places. We saw the most amazing landmarks! But we had no idea what we were looking at or why. We signed up for an English-speaking tour, but no one spoke English. If the tour hadn't said English, we wouldn't have expected to learn new things and would have been content just to see. What we saw was great, but we had to go back and research the amazing things we saw. (Even a quick itinerary on Klook with titles of where we were going so we could look them up would have helped us on this tour!) We are so glad we went!
It rained heavily on the morning of our departure, and for a moment I was worried the boat wouldn't leave, but thankfully it still did. If you get seasick, I really recommend taking motion sickness medication. On the way there, we were going against the wind, and the boat was really like a roller coaster, swaying up and down 😅. The boat ride took about an hour and a bit. We were very lucky that the weather was mostly good when we arrived at Qimei and Wang'an, allowing us to leisurely ride scooters around and take beautiful photos. The scooters were in decent condition; just pick one out carefully. The outlying islands are truly beautiful and well worth a visit to see scenery you can't find on Taiwan's main island 😀
On July 8th, we took the Hai-An yacht to Qimei and Wang'an Islands. Since we had a child under 6 years old with us, we opted for the island-hopping tour bus package. It was a good decision; although scooters are more convenient and offer more flexible timing, July is already very hot, and you can easily get sunburned if you're not careful. Plus, we were worried about the child falling asleep and it being dangerous on a scooter. The tour guide on the bus was very detailed and professional in their explanations. In Qimei, they even found a high vantage point to help us take photos of the Twin Hearts Stone Weir, which I highly recommend. The service was good.
A very convenient and comfortable trip. No need to worry about transportation or ferry times, as staff will remind you! No need to worry about getting wet if it rains, and there's air conditioning if it's sunny! They also stop and introduce special attractions, which you might just whiz past if you were riding a scooter on your own! Highly recommended!
There was a northeast monsoon that day, and the captain would inform us in advance about the approximate degree of rocking. Basically, at Tongpan, the boat stops for introductions and photos without disembarking. Then we island-hopped to Qimei, and then to Wang'an. The two islands experienced different degrees of rocking due to ocean currents. For those prone to seasickness, it's recommended to sit at the stern of the boat. When disembarking, choosing the bus option is convenient and fast, which I sincerely recommend.
It's a bit of a shame that we couldn't hear the commentary from the second-floor cabin, but it was quite clear on the first floor. We rented a scooter, and accidentally couldn't find the scooter ticket in Wang'an. We immediately informed the staff, and we are very grateful that they promptly helped us issue another scooter ticket. Wang'an and Qimei are truly beautiful.
