Freespace Jazz Fest: RubberBand x Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra

Celebrate the sounds of Hong Kong with two home-grown favourites and an electrifying fusion of jazz, rock, big band and Cantopop

Coming together for a rare live outdoor collaboration, two huge fan favourites – Cantopop heroes RubberBand and the acclaimed Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra – present an electrifying fusion of home-grown Hong Kong sounds.

For almost two decades, local icons RubberBand have had Hong Kong audiences shouting for more with their powerful onstage presence and potent blend of indie rock, Cantopop and heartfelt ballads. This time, the Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra lend their virtuosic big band jazz arrangements to the mix.

While RubberBand and Patrick Lui are longtime collaborators – Lui is the arranger and co-producer on a number of the band’s albums – this show marks one of the few times they have performed together live on stage. The collaboratively curated performance combines Lui’s signature big-band style and a movie-inspired theme, showcasing film soundtracks written by RubberBand, as well as new arrangements of familiar music from popular Hong Kong films.

Regular headliners at Freespace Jazz Fest, the Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra have in the past teamed up with major local names like Janice Vidal, Angelita Li and MC Yan.

Living legend Herbie Hancock returns to Hong Kong for an unmissable live performance

More than ten years after his last visit to Hong Kong, legendary jazz pianist, composer and bandleader Herbie Hancock returns with a live performance at Wonderland – offering local audiences a rare opportunity to experience the artistry of a master up close.

One of the most influential and forward-thinking musicians of our time, Hancock has created groundbreaking music throughout his seven-decade career, pioneering genre-defying fusions of jazz, rock, funk and electronica, and inspiring fans and musicians across the musical spectrum worldwide with albums like Headhunters and Mwandishi, Rockit and Future Shock.

Now in his 80s, and the recipient of 14 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, Hancock continues to explore fresh sonic possibilities, collaborating with a new generation of contemporary artists like rapper Kendrick Lamar, jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington and young jazz duo DOMi and JD BECK.

Joining Hancock on stage at Wonderland are eight-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard on trumpet, guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist James Genus and drummer Jaylen Petinaud.
