Kek Lok Si Temple

Kek Lok Si Temple is open year-round, but if you want a truly magical experience, visit during Chinese New Year. The temple is beautifully illuminated with thousands of lights, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. For a quieter visit, consider going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and the midday heat.

Kek Lok Si Temple is easily accessible from George Town. You can take a private taxi for around 25 MYR, or opt for the public bus (bus #203 or #204) which costs just 2 MYR per person. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes. If you're up for a bit of exercise, you can also walk the 3 kilometers from the Penang Hill Railway Station.

Since Kek Lok Si Temple is a place of worship, it's important to dress modestly. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended as the temple complex involves a lot of walking and climbing stairs. This will ensure you have a comfortable and respectful visit.

Most of Kek Lok Si Temple is free to enter, but there are small fees for certain attractions. For example, the inclined lift to the Kuan Yin statue costs 3 MYR ($0.80), and entrance to the pagoda is 2 MYR ($0.54). These fees are quite reasonable and well worth the experience.

Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a lot of walking and climbing stairs. Be cautious when walking on the curvy main road as it has no pavement. It's a good idea to allocate a full day to explore both Kek Lok Si Temple and nearby Penang Hill so you don't feel rushed.
