What to expect
[Takayama Old Town] Known as the “Little Kyoto of Hida,” it completely preserves the castle town appearance of the Edo period. Sanmachi Suji consists of three streets; Kamisannomachi has more tourists, while walking further in reveals fewer crowds. As an important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings in Japan, the old streets are dotted with century-old merchant houses, allowing visitors to experience the quaint Japanese charm and making it ideal for checking in and strolling around.
[Shirakawa-go Illumination] Located in Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a World Heritage site featuring iconic Gassho-style thatched-roof houses. The winter-limited illumination event is held only 4 nights a year. With snow covering the Gassho-style residences and warm lights turning on as night falls, it resembles a fairytale wonderland and is an unmissable limited-time winter landscape.

The winter light-up ceremony, held four times a year, is so popular that you can only get tickets by joining a tour. The meeting instructions were a bit unclear. The tour guide acted as the driver and basically didn't provide much information, not even introducing what there is to do in Shirakawa-go. They didn't really act like a tour guide, it felt like they were just rushing the itinerary and rushing to finish work. They emphasized that we could only stay in Shirakawa-go for 4 hours. We arrived early, but they forced us to leave by 7:00, even though the light-up ceremony goes until 7:30.
The driver was friendly and the ride was smooth.
Good to know
- We will send you an email between 16:00 and 21:00 the day before your trip, including: meeting time, license plate number, tour guide, and the guide's social contact information. Please be sure to check your email (it might be in the spam folder!). Do not be late on the day of the trip, as no refunds or changes are allowed on that day! Therefore, you must check your email and add the tour guide!!!
- Please keep your mobile phone accessible during the tour so that relevant reception staff can contact you! If you have not received the email by 21:00, please contact our company.
