What to expect

The Shirakawa-go Light-Up is one of the most magical winter spectacles in Japan, open to the public on only four designated dates each year (January 12, January 18, January 25, and February 1 in 2026). On these four short evenings, tourists from all over the world flock to the village, making tickets and slots highly sought after. On these rare nights, the snow-covered gassho-style village is illuminated by twinkling lights, as if time has stopped in a fairytale world. Witnessing this scene firsthand is not just a travel memory, but an unforgettable winter miracle. This tour departs from Nagoya, allowing you to explore the “Little Kyoto of Hida” Takayama Old Town during the day and arrive at Shirakawa-go in the evening to enjoy the light-up. With a Chinese-speaking driver and guide accompanying you throughout the journey, you don’t have to worry about reservations or transportation, making it easy to seize this precious experience that only happens four days a year.

Review for: Departure from Nagoya - Takayama Old Town + Shirakawa-go Illumination (Excluding Observatory)

1. The driver's driving was smooth and comfortable, and he didn't talk much. He also asked if we needed to use the restroom along the way, showing that he was competent. 2. It is recommended to provide a simple map of the destination for download before the trip. 3. The stay in Takayama is relatively short, and the stay in the Katahara-machi preservation area is not distinctive enough (there are many such townhouses in Japan). It is recommended to consider other possible arrangements in the future. 4. The prior notification was only sent to one of the two people, which made the other person who did not receive the notification uneasy. It is recommended to clearly inform in advance that "only one person will be notified." 5. In addition, the driver notified car number x. It is suggested to put a prominent sign in the car window to make it easier to find.

Review for: Departure from Nagoya - Takayama Old Town + Shirakawa-go Illumination (Excluding Observatory)

The time in Takayama was a bit too short. We only had 1.5 hours there. And the time in Shirakawago was a bit too long. Shirakawago is a very small place. We explored the whole village in 1 hour but we had 4 hours there. The rest of the time we were just walking around aimlessly. There weren't too many shops and cafes there, and seriously, they were all very crowded with too many tourists. 2.5 hours in Takayama and 3 hours in Shirakawago will be just right. The scenery in Shirakawago was beautiful. But the light-up event was a little underwhelming. Not a lot of lights to illuminate the houses and there were a lot of places in darkness. Would love to go up the observation deck but it was too bad the tickets were not included in the tour. No option to purchase the ticket either.

I thought we'd be on a large tour bus, but instead we were split into several 9-seater vans. The round trip took almost 5 hours! The seating was cramped and uncomfortable! The tour guide was basically just the driver; there was no guided tour at all, just driving! Luckily, the driving was very smooth and I didn't get carsick! However, once we arrived at Shirakawa-go, it was all worth it! Everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime!

There's only a driver, no tour guide. The driver only gave a rough explanation of the attractions and wasn't clear about the lighting events, which was a bit worrying. However, the overall journey was very smooth and safe, and the ride was comfortable.

Spent $7200 and found it completely different from the photos. The illuminated scenery is vastly different from the official photos, with absolutely no romantic atmosphere whatsoever. It feels like a total scam... When the time came, I thought the lights would come on instantly, but they didn't... I suggest everyone not be fooled by the lighting event.

We were not informed of the vehicle number we would be riding in prior to the trip. Upon arrival at the meeting point, everyone else had received an email with the vehicle number. We had to ask each vehicle individually (there were over a dozen), and almost missed our boarding time!
