What to expect
Must-visit super popular spots departing from Kumamoto all at once! Experience the canyon scenery of Takachiho Gorge, the cultural experience of the minitrain or shrine, the vast grasslands of Kusasenri, and the breathtaking scenery of Mount Aso. Enjoy a relaxing tour throughout, allowing you to take great photos while enjoying the charm of nature and culture. First stop: Takachiho Gorge Boating Takachiho Gorge is a famous steep cliff canyon in Kyushu with sheer rock walls and clear stream water. The Manai Waterfall cascades down from a high place, creating a picturesque scenery. Stroll along the canyon trail or take a boat ride to feel the magnificence of nature and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Note: Solo travelers will share a boat with other passengers. Thank you for your understanding. Second stop: Takachiho Minitrain Ride the Takachiho Minitrain as it slowly travels along the mountain canyon, enjoying the lush forest and stream scenery along the way. When the minitrain is not operating, the itinerary will be changed to visit Takachiho Shrine to experience the tranquil shrine culture and Senbon Torii (thousand torii gates). Third stop: Kusasenri Kusasenri is a vast grassland at the foot of Mount Aso, with lush green grass and surrounded by volcanic groups in the distance, offering a vast and open landscape. Here, you can overlook the panoramic view of the grasslands and distant mountains, or take photos along the grassland trails or near animals to add depth to the frame. Fourth stop: Mount Aso Crater Mount Aso Crater is an active volcano landscape where you can experience the geothermal atmosphere and magnificent volcanic landforms up close. For photography, it is recommended to use foreground rocks or railings to increase the sense of space, capturing the moment when the crater is smoking or distant mountain ranges accentuating the crater to present a magnificent scenery, which is the climax highlight of the trip. In case the Mount Aso crater is closed, it will be changed to Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. These four major attractions combine the canyon beauty of Takachiho Gorge, the cultural experience of the minitrain or shrine, the vast grasslands of Kusasenri, and the shocking landforms of the Mount Aso Crater. You can experience the essence of Kyushu’s nature and culture in just one day. Come and set off with us! Warm Tips Due to potential ticket purchase failures on the Takachiho boating online ticketing network, since you have purchased a package including tickets, we will definitely do our best to purchase them for you. If we are unable to purchase them, we will notify you by email at least 4 days in advance. Thank you for your understanding! On the third Thursday of each month, due to the Takachiho Minitrain being closed for rest, the itinerary will be changed to Takachiho Gorge + optional Takachiho boating + Takachiho Shrine + Kusasenri + Mount Aso Volcano Plaza.

Reviews
My friends originally planned to rent a car for our trip on May 4, 2026, but we later realized it coincided with Japan's Golden Week. Concerned about driving safety, we opted for a one-day tour instead. It turned out to be incredibly convenient and allowed us to visit many places! We are very grateful to tour guide Kong for his detailed explanations throughout the trip, which provided a clear and easy-to-understand insight into Japanese culture. Although the itinerary was a bit tight, and we couldn't visit the volcano because it was closed, and there was no horse meat at Aso (only mango shaved ice), it was still very worthwhile :). Before reaching Kusasenri, we passed by a very cute Matcha Pudding Mountain. It was very cold at the top of the mountain, and our time was limited, so I recommend skipping the coffee queue and heading straight up to take photos, where you can overlook the volcano. Also, if possible, I suggest the tour description advise travelers to dress warmly, as I completely underestimated how cold it would be on the mountain this time. No wonder the guide wore a sweater and a down jacket… I recommend everyone going to bring a wool hat, otherwise, your hair will be a mess, making it hard to take pictures. The scenic train costs an additional 2300 JPY. There are only two small stalls selling snacks (sweets and drinks) and a small souvenir area inside the ticket station. The entire train ride is very enjoyable and has a retro feel. Everyone waves at you throughout the journey, which is very welcoming. The train has cute light displays when passing through tunnels, and the driver uses bubbles at the summit, but be careful not to drop your phone, as the wind was very strong that day, and holding a phone with one hand was risky. I recommend having some protective measure to secure your phone. Additionally, the towering trees at Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine are beautiful and magnificent. Climbing the stairs to the summit is also quite a rush, so you might not have time for a leisurely stroll. The very top is a unique cave entrance, but if you're really tired, it's perfectly fine to just visit the main shrine halfway up. You can buy the Goshuin (stamp) at the parking lot before getting back on the bus. One hour at Takachiho Gorge is plenty, and thankfully, we managed to go boating that day. If your package includes boating, it's quite amusing if you happen to be with a group of beginners who all get stuck at the gorge entrance. I was nervous when I first got on the boat, and capsizing or accidentally deploying the airbag costs 3000 JPY. However, there are always staff on hand to assist; if you get stuck or can't paddle, you can ask the guide for help, so it's very safe. 30 minutes of boating is enough time to paddle to the gorge and back. Overall, the entire trip was still wonderful, and I'm grateful for the good weather, which made for a very enjoyable experience and a beautiful memory ^_^
Sun was our tour guide for the day, and he was fantastic. He’s very experienced and kept us entertained with plenty of fun stories throughout the bus journey. At every stop, he shared helpful tips and great recommendations on what to do, eat, and buy. He even suggested places to try after the tour ended, which we really appreciated. He helped every group taking photos as well. he makes sure everyone is well taken care of. Overall, we had a wonderful family experience. We’re so glad we chose the train and boat rides—they really helped us make the most of the day. The timing was just right, not rushed at all. Highly recommended!
I highly recommend our guide, Mr. Kong. He was very kind and dedicated to explaining the scenery, historical background, and local culture. The entire trip's itinerary was very smooth, and the experience was excellent. In addition to helping with photos and explanations at major attractions, he also introduced various small places we passed by on the tour bus, allowing us to unexpectedly learn a lot about local customs, traditions, and stories we hadn't known before. The weather in Takachiho was great today, but there were quite a few people for boating, making it easy to get congested, though the gorge itself was still incredibly beautiful. Since Mount Aso was closed, we went to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine as an alternative. The shrine in the forest appeared even more solemn. For the last stop at Kusasenri for lunch, the guide also helped everyone with a strategy on how to eat, shop, and take photos most efficiently. The entire day's experience was wonderful.
great tour with an amazing guide Sun-san who is well versed with the history and information of all the attractions, his candid and lively explanation is a great highlight of the trip, and it's so refreshing to have a tour guide that shares what are not just the must tries and also what to avoid as well (souvenirs and snacks). the pace of the trip is great as well, and I appreciate that Sun-san was flexible to shuffle the sequence of attractions to visit to avoid the weekend crowd, that's really thoughtful! and not forgetting the main highlight of the trip visiting the beautiful Mt Aso (we didnt get to go there due to the recent accident), shrines and gorge! well planned and well paced - was an amazing trip in all and would highly recommend it!
The day tour is totally worth it. Joining the group makes transportation completely hassle-free. The scenery in Takachiho is wonderful, with picturesque gorges, and the little trolley is very cute; if you prefer not to ride it, you can just rest in the lounge for half a year—wait, half an hour. The shrine is very tranquil, though you do have to climb a few steps, and walking sticks are available to borrow at the foot of the mountain. Mount Aso can only be viewed from a distance at Kusasenri, but the Aso milk ice cream is delicious. Our tour guide, Guide Sun, holds a Kumamoto Castle Lord Certificate; he was very enthusiastic and humorous, introducing us to Kumamoto all along the way, recommending local food, and helping us avoid tourist traps. Definitely a five-star review!
It was a wonderful schedule, but the weather~ ㅠㅠ It rained a lot. Still, it was okay to enjoy the scenery. It's a shame that the fog was so dense we couldn't see the grasslands of Kusasenri or the smoke from the Aso crater at all. The stairway leading up to Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine had a mystical atmosphere, and the scenery seen from the Amaterasu mini-train while wearing raincoats in the rain was nice, but... considering the high price, it was just so-so~~ Finally, Takachiho Gorge was truly wonderful. The scenery is breathtaking enough to make you exclaim. The forest path beside the gorge was great, and the espresso coffee at the cafe at the end of the path was also lovely. Our lovely Chinese guide explained things very diligently.. but since I couldn't understand Chinese, I managed to get the gist of it through Google simultaneous interpretation. She told us the meeting places and times in English and Chinese. It would have been nice if she spoke a little Korean, too. Still, thank you for guiding us so diligently~ I highly recommend the tour. (It would be even better to skip the train and give us more time at the shrine.)
Today was perfect, with an incredibly kind guide and even ideal weather. Mount Aso was so beautiful, and the grandeur of Takachiho Gorge, along with the mysterious scenery of Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, was all wonderful. Our guide was attentive to each person, even with a large group! I'm usually a big fan of independent travel, so I didn't have high expectations for this tour, but the itinerary was so well-planned that it was a great experience. Most of the group was Chinese, and I was the only Korean, but I was so well taken care of, and I'm very grateful. If the weather is good, you absolutely must go on this tour!!👍👍
Although it was a shame that Mount Aso was closed and we couldn't visit, Takachiho Gorge and Kusasenri were wonderful. We are truly grateful to our guide, Kong, who worked so hard despite the rainy weather. I was a little worried because the guide was Chinese, but they provided the tour information in English, so we were able to enjoy the itinerary without any inconvenience. They also enthusiastically took photos and helped us get great souvenir shots. 🤗 When Mount Aso reopens and I visit Kumamoto again, I would definitely like to go with Kong. You truly did a great job.
Great value, beautiful gorge, interesting train ride, unique boat paddling experience, and our guide was very helpful, knowledgeable and entertaining. Overall, highly recommended if you stay in Kumamoto. Good schedule and plenty time was given at each location, didn't feel rushed.
The overall experience of this Takachiho + Aso day trip was excellent! Although the Takachiho boat ride was canceled due to a typhoon, which was a bit disappointing, the waterfalls with abundant water were even more spectacular and beautiful. Aso Volcano's crater was temporarily closed due to an incident, preventing a close-up view, but the overall scenery was still stunning and worth visiting. Our tour guide, Sun Peng, was very professional and responsible. He explained everything clearly and was very attentive to everyone's itinerary experience, which made us feel at ease 👍. He also introduced me to horse meat, allowing me to try something new 🤗.Overall, it was a very satisfying trip, highly recommended for friends visiting Kyushu for the first time!
