VIRTUAL REALITY EXHIBITION IN HONG KONG: ‘Versailles: Lost Gardens of the Sun King’

THE SCENARIO

Guided by the monarch’s landscape architect André Le Nôtre, the user will have the immense privilege of seeing and entering three places: the Grotto of Tethys, the Royal Menagerie and the Labyrinth grove: three mythical places conceived as the three acts of a great theatre of water, art and greenery, intended to entertain the Court and to stage, resolutely spectacular and symbolic, the royal absolutism.

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

A 25-minute virtual reality experience Languages: English, Cantonese, Mandarin, French Ages: We recommend 6 and up Genres: Immersive Exhibition, VR Tech, Museum, Art History

AUTHOR’S STATEMENT

Louis XIV loved his Château deeply, but it was for his gardens that he felt the strongest passion. In 1689, the sovereign wrote, in his own hand, a guide entitled "Manière de montrer le jardin de Versailles", and over the course of his reign, no fewer than seven revised versions of the book were published. If the monarch dreamed of making men turn in his orbit, it was on his paths and groves, which had been reworked ten times, that he first enjoyed casting the power of his rays...

Even before the official installation of power at Versailles in 1682, Louis XIV imagined his first garden as a festive, natural setting for his dreams of absolute grandeur. Victims of the successive redevelopments of the Château and then of the Revolution, there is unfortunately nothing left today of these primitive gardens, which nevertheless left their mark on contemporaries and contributed so much to the universal renown of Versailles.

Today, thanks to immersive technologies, we have the means to make the sunrise again on these vanished spaces. We want to create an experience that takes visitors on a journey of discovery of the first splendors imagined by Louis XIV in the 1660s, following the initial works that saw the Château become the entertainment capital of Europe.

The tickets were very easy to redeem. It was also a fantastic experience - one that I have never had before. The views were stunning - so real - as if we were really in the Palace of Versailles. The whole experience, though a little short, was superb.

I saw VR activities introduced online for the West Kowloon Cultural District, and booking through Klook was relatively cheaper, so I booked a double ticket the night before. Although the park was bustling with people on Halloween eve, there weren't many people playing VR. I arrived 15 minutes before the appointment time, showed the QR code to the staff, and was able to enter. Then I put my personal belongings in a locked locker and waited for the staff to help me put on the VR device to play. It was my first time playing, and I really felt that the virtual people could stand a little further away 🤣. The marked area wasn't big, but after putting on the VR device, there were white lines to remind you 🔔 so you weren't afraid of hitting the wall. It was a fun experience.

It was very convenient to redeem the tickets purchased in advance on Klook. The venue isn't large, but the short film's visuals are beautifully composed, making you feel as though you're in the Palace of Versailles. Unfortunately, the short film is quite short. I hope they can lengthen it and add more content.

Put on your VR glasses, and tigers and flamingos come to life, seemingly walking alongside you. Magnificent sculptures appear vividly before your eyes.

This is my second VR experience after Night with the Impressionists. Still an amazing experience, especially how it feels that the graphics are right next to you, but the overall experience wasn’t as good as Impressionists. For 25 min, $200 is a little pricey but I guess that’s why it was much less crowded. Only a handful of people so it doesn’t impact your experience.
