What to expect

The Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the premier destination for understanding ancient Chinese architecture, history, and culture. Discover China's rich cultural heritage within its walls. As the world's largest and most complete surviving ancient architectural complex, its layout, three-dimensional effect, and majestic form are unparalleled. Because of this, it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Several palaces within the Forbidden City house comprehensive historical art galleries, painting galleries, specialized ceramics galleries, stationery galleries, and exhibitions of Qing Dynasty court relics. They contain vast collections of ancient art treasures. The clock exhibition, with daily clock demonstrations, is an absolute must-see.

Review for: [Join-in Group Tour] Forbidden City + Jingshan Park + Treasure Gallery (Chinese & English Speaking Guide)

Our visit to the Forbidden City was truly unforgettable and absolutely worth it. The palace complex is enormous and filled with fascinating history, and having a guide made all the difference in understanding what we were seeing. I highly recommend this tour—especially with Peter—if you want to experience the Forbidden City on a deeper level rather than just walking through it.

The site is fabulous; you truly don't know where to look first. The guide was only in Chinese and led us through the main path to pass through the gates and temples, providing us with information. The meeting point was poorly indicated (meet at the East Gate, but we had to enter through it and walk 10 minutes to the South Gate). The tour time is too short to see all the palaces; we chose to stay on-site and not go to Jinshan Park across the street (but it's a definitive exit). There are parts of the Forbidden City that require an additional fee if you wish to see them. In any case, it's magnificent, and you shouldn't be afraid of crowds.

Bob gave an excellent tour of the Forbidden City, informative, engaging, and full of fascinating details. Although we spent some time waiting in the hot weather to buy tickets, his knowledge and energy made the visit thoroughly enjoyable.

Yesterday's Forbidden City and Jingshan tour was excellent! Even though the weather was hot, Peter was very professional, always making sure we stayed in the shade during his explanations. His commentary was also very interesting, and both children listened attentively. We learned many fascinating stories and anecdotes. It was a great experience, highly recommended! 👍

The tour will start after the guide has purchased the tickets, so around 30mins after the gathering time. Our guide Dean was giving information in both English and Chinese since there was a mix of tourist, the pace will be slightly fast around the different buildings so if you are not as interested in the history and more to taking pictures, this tour is not suitable as not much time is allocated for that. The walk up to Jingshan Park to see the Forbidden City is just 10 mins uphill, however there is a lot of people so it is also not a great spot for pictures as it gets crowded. The group size is around 25 pax.

I received a WeChat message the day before on the meeting point and was instructed to look out for the Klook flag. While there was a hiccup in the ticketing process that prevented Bob (our initial guide) to enter the Forbidden City, we had Zhang as our replacement and she was animated in regaling the historic moments of each place. She also ensured our wellbeing was met by giving us appropriate breaks from the intense heat, while keeping to the time limit. Bob then took over the JingShan park leg and gave us a quick overview before letting us explore on our own. He was forthcoming to take questions, and I had my answers on Bei Hai park and famous Peking Duck eateries.

Peter is exceptional, not just explaining the structures but going into deep detail of Chinese History, philosophy and beliefs, making the experience more fascinating. His presentation and delivery is clear. This should be the standard of how tours are done. Regarding the tour, 3 hours is ample to go around the main areas of Forbidden City. They had devices to make sure we can hear Peter explaining. We had a break in the middle for refreshments and toilet, but don't expect high quality food and drinks inside Forbidden City. All in all, great job Peter and hope if you join the tour you get to meet him too!
