Japan’s first yokai museum opens in Miyoshi, Hiroshima In addition to the ‘Ino Mononoke Roku’ Yokai Story, a yokai folktale set in Miyoshi, the exhibit features yokai-related materials carefully selected from approximately 5,500 items, including picture scrolls, colored woodblock prints, pottery and toys. These items were donated by Mr. Yumoto Koichi, a folklorist and yokai researcher, and are highly regarded as one of Japan’s largest collections of yokai-related artifacts.
Summer/Autumn Exhibition Introducing “Tsukumogami: When Household Tools Turn into Yokai!” Abandoned by humans and fueled by resentment, everyday tools have transformed into yokai (monsters)! That’s right—they are the “Tsukumogami.” While they caused absolute chaos in ancient picture scrolls, by the Edo period, they had evolved into mysterious, delightful characters that stole the spotlight. Through it all, their timeless message remains unchanged: “Take good care of your things!” Now is the perfect time to look at Tsukumogami and think about what a sustainable society truly means. Let’s explore it together!
