What to expect
The Temple of Heaven Park is where the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties performed annual ceremonies of heaven worship and prayed for good harvests. The Temple of Heaven is world-renowned for its rigorous architectural layout, unique architectural structure, and magnificent architectural decoration. It covers a total area of approximately 2.7 million square meters and is divided into an inner altar and an outer altar. The main buildings are located in the inner altar, with the Circular Mound Altar and the Imperial Vault of Heaven in the south, and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Hall of Abstinence in the north. These two groups of buildings are connected by a north-south thoroughfare called the Danbi Bridge. The ancient cypresses of the outer altar encircle the inner altar, making the main building complex appear even more solemn and magnificent. The altar also features the Echo Wall, the Three-Sound Stone, and the Dialogue Stone, all of which were built using ingenious acoustic principles, fully demonstrating the advanced level of ancient Chinese architectural technology. The Temple of Heaven Park is the largest group of altar buildings preserved in China.
