GreatStayed with family
This is an older place so if you are looking for sparkling accommodation maybe not here. If you want a more traditional Japanese hotel this is a good choice. Great free breakfast. Private onsen by reservation. Free beer and noodles along with other snacks each evening from 4-6. Larger room than many Japanese hotels. The staff is fantastic. Free shuttle to the train station. Be aware if you are walking with luggage there is a major hill to climb. Call the hotel and they will send a car anytime before 7:00 pm

The whole place is old, dated and needs some refurbishment & cleanup. The guests are asked to take off their footwear when coming in and use provided & used theirs instead, supposedly to keep the floors spotless. But the carpeted floors look worn out, with long large dark patches everywhere. The same footwear can be used on the outside balconies which have dust & dirt.
Moreover, the decor is ghastly with plastic plants & flowers everywhere, brown carpet, dark wall, cheap small lightings. The breakfast are monotonous, mostly unchanged during our 3 morning visits, hardly edible. Dinners are much the same with unexcited menus. This is made worse as there is not many restaurants in the town that are open after 5pm. We were attracted to the town due to the travel blurbs that it is one of the top places to visit in Japan. This may be true only for the shrines and scenic places, but definitely not with the supporting eateries.
The only good points about the accommodation (definitely not 'resort' as in the name) are the friendly staff and the children playpen in the common area.

Our room was tiny and very much in need of an update. It was dark, the windows had piles of spiders outside them, so although it was quite hot in the room we were NOT opening the windows - need screens!! The bathroom was a ‘step up’ which was a bit awkward in the middle of the night, and the TV was very small. Nowhere to sit in the room comfortably to watch TV - only on the bed, wedged up with pillows. Not so comfy. The carpets were dirty, the hallways needed a fresh coat of paint, there were plastic plants all over, and flashing disco lights on the ceiling of the lobby area. They did offer a pre-dinner drink, which was nice, but because the hotel did not seem clean, we chose not to eat dinner there. The breakfast buffet was very lacklustre - there was a lot of variety but it was not great quality. We tasted many things they offered, but in the end just stuck to the yogurt and canned fruit in a bowl. They do need to up their game. One of 2 massage chairs was broken - only one half of the chair worked - and it actually was really painful - if it is broken, either fix it or remove it. The coffee in the morning was good, and the sunrise view was SPECTACULAR!

This was the best place I have stayed at yet!! The staff is so nice, and respectable they all deserve a raise!! Breakfast was amazing and so was dinner. They have dinners that correlate with the seasons. And while you are in matsushima you must try the oysters.

This was a lovely property; however, like many Japanese hotels, it uses too much chlorine in the cleaning. There was so much chlorine in the sheets that my skin and eyes were burning, and we had to open the windows.
The staff is EXCELLENT.
Service is EXELLENT
I have no complaints about the service.
My friend and I shared a room with two beds, but there was only one night near my friend's bed, so I had nowhere to place my things. The room could use another small table.
The food was good and very generous.

Was a long up hill walk from station, staff were very freindly but this is a dated property, and god knows why they had the heaters going in the whole place on a fine beautiful day? was so hot and stuffy in dining room for breakfast we ate outside on balcony. Breakfast was nice and lovely free onsen for guests

Facility is clean and , interestingly, with a Thai theme in lobby. Only wish the public bath had later hours and rotenburo was bigger.
