Spring (late March – early April): Cherry blossoms in full bloom, Togetsukyo Bridge and Arashiyama Park are top cherry blossom viewing spots in Kyoto. Summer (June – August): Fresh green bamboo, cool and refreshing, Hozugawa River boat rides are very popular. Autumn (mid-November – early December): Autumn leaves dye the mountains red, Tenryu-ji Temple, Jojakko-ji Temple, and Togetsukyo Bridge are among Japan's 100 famous autumn foliage spots. Winter (December – February): Serene snowscapes, bamboo groves covered in snow like an ink painting, fewer tourists.
- Nara Park is a giant historical park in Nara City, Japan, famous for its deer, Great Buddha, and ancient shrines, a must-visit in Kansai. Buy deer crackers (200 yen / pack) to feed them; the deer will bow to beg for food and are very gentle.
- Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, Kyoto's most stunning vermilion torii gate shrine, a filming location for "Memoirs of a Geisha." Thousands of vermilion torii gates stretch along the slopes of Mount Inari, forming a red tunnel. The torii gates are donated by worshippers; the further up the mountain you go, the fewer people there are, and you can get an empty shot within 10 minutes of walking deeper.
What to expect
【Nara Park】 Nara Park is an urban park located at the foot of Mount Wakakusa in Nara City. Famous historical sites such as Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine are all located here, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling to Nara. Mount Wakakusa, near the park, offers a magnificent view of Nara’s scenery. It is also home to the most concentrated deer population, and feeding the adorable deer is one of the biggest attractions for visitors. The deer here are also very spiritual; they will actively approach visitors who have deer crackers in their hands, so be careful not to be knocked over by a group of deer!
【Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine】 One of the shrines deeply beloved by the people of Kyoto, it enshrines Inari Okami (OINARISANN). Since ancient times, it has primarily been responsible for bountiful harvests and business prosperity. Millions of people visit for New Year’s prayers during the first three days of January each year. It is quite famous not only in Kyoto but also throughout Japan. The Senbon Torii (thousand torii gates) within the shrine grounds are even more impressive, prompting visitors to take photos as souvenirs.
【Arashiyama】 Arashiyama is composed of two areas: Arashiyama and Sagano. This area not only boasts rich cultural attractions but also natural scenery that changes with the seasons and a retro scenic train. It is home to many ancient temples and shrines, with Tenryu-ji Temple being a World Heritage site. The famous bamboo grove path stretches from Nonomiya Shrine to Okochi Sanso. As a sacred place for cherry blossom viewing and autumn foliage, Arashiyama attracts a large number of visitors in spring and autumn, and tickets for the Sagano Scenic Railway are often hard to come by. In winter and summer, however, it is very tranquil, suitable for travelers who prefer a quiet pace. The Arashiyama area has many old restaurants, wagashi (Japanese confectionery) shops, and cute general stores. You can also rent kimonos and rickshaws, making it a perfect place to slow down and relax.
