The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente di Pisa) is a must-visit landmark in the historic Campo dei Miracoli, Pisa, Italy. Part of the cathedral complex, it stands alongside the Pisa Cathedral and Baptistery. Famous for its extraordinary tilt, caused by soft ground, this bell tower leans at nearly four degrees, making it an authentic miracle of medieval architecture. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has eight stories, including the belfry, and contains 296 steps in its spiral staircase. It reaches 55.86 meters on the low side and 56.67 meters on the high side. The belfry houses seven bells, the largest weighing 3.5 tons and cast in 1655. Each bell produces a distinct musical note. Despite its tilt, the tower has withstood multiple earthquakes over the centuries, thanks to its flexible foundation that absorbs seismic vibrations. Recently, a ceremony was held to celebrate the 850th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone, highlighting its historical significance in the tower's legacy. With its white marble exterior and iconic arches, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a must-see photo spot and an architectural gem of Italy.

We had an amazing experience thanks to Sara, our guide, and Patrick, our bus driver. Everything ran smoothly—we arrived at each destination on time and had enough time to explore. Patrick drove safely the entire trip, and when my husband accidentally left his phone on the bus, Sara quickly coordinated with him to locate and secure it. The phone was returned safely, which we really appreciated. We visited many beautiful spots in just one day—it was a bit tiring, but Sara and Patrick kept the energy up and made the journey enjoyable. The only downside for me was the group meal at the winery; the food wasn’t quite to my taste, and I think we might have enjoyed it more if we had ordered individually. Still, overall, the experience was excellent, and I would absolutely rate this tour 5 stars.

The tour guide was excellent. I’ve booked four trips through Klook over the past week, and this guide had the best English of them all. He gave clear instructions and managed the schedule very well. My family had a great time today.

It was a great trip experience. The whole trip was equipped with two tour guides. They gave historical explanations on the bus before arriving at each scenic spot. After getting off the bus and walking to the meeting point, they agreed on the meeting time and then let the tourists move freely. The time was well allocated and the tour was not rushed. It was a very comfortable group trip. The wine tasting itinerary is very special. You can drink authentic Italian wine, which is very suitable for wine lovers. The guided tour of Siena is worth it. The decoration and paintings in the cathedral are spectacular!

We joined this Pisa tour leaving from Florence. The itinerary is very well organized. There is an English tour guide who has been assigned to our group, very funny and informative. A little short fall is too little time is allocated to climb the leaning tower. There are almost 300 steps and we need to finish climbing and coming down in less than 20 minutes through the only available stairs, leaving us not enough time to grab some food and souvenirs.

The Pisa Leaning Tower (Torre Pendente di Pisa) is a remarkable architectural structure and tourist attraction in Italy, known for its unique lean due to an unstable foundation. Located in Pisa, Italy, within the cathedral square, this bell tower is known for its remarkable tilt, caused by soft ground beneath its foundations. The Pisa Tower stands eight stories tall, measuring 55.86 meters on the low side and 56.67 meters on the high side. Visitors can climb its 296-step staircase to the bell chamber, enjoying panoramic views of the cathedral square and its surroundings.

Pisa Cathedral

The Pisa Cathedral, or Duomo di Pisa, is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Piazza dei Miracoli. Construction began in 1063, and the cathedral features a nave with double-vaulted aisles. Its white marble facade, intricate arches, and grand dome reflect the artistic brilliance of Nicola Pisano and later Giovanni di Simone. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes, mosaics, and the magnificent pulpit by sculptor Bonanno Pisano.

Pisa Baptistry

Located in Piazza dei Miracoli, the Pisa Baptistry is Italy’s largest baptistery and a stunning example of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Built between 1152 and the 14th century, it features a dome and a hexagonal pulpit. Known for its extraordinary acoustics, the baptistery creates a mesmerizing effect. Its dome, supported by columns and arches, complements the cathedral complex, alongside the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Pisa Cathedral.

Piazza dei Miracoli

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Piazza dei Miracoli is Pisa’s most iconic landmark, showcasing the Pisan Romanesque style with intricately decorated facades and colonnades. This significant religious complex includes the Pisa Cathedral, begun in 1063, with a grand nave, and the Baptistery, built from 1152 to the 14th century, known for its dome and acoustics. The Leaning Tower of Pisa serves as the cathedral’s bell tower, while the Camposanto cemetery features a cloister enclosing a sacred burial ground. This stunning square remains a must-visit for its remarkable architecture and history.

Culture and History

The construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in 1173, overseen by Bonanno Pisano, with later contributions from Nicola Pisano and Giovanni di Simone. As the tower rose, its tilt became apparent due to the soft ground. Several interruptions occurred due to military conflicts, and engineers built upper floors with one side taller to counterbalance the lean, creating a curved structure. The first stabilization attempt in 1835 worsened the tilt, which reached 5.5 degrees by 1990 before being reduced to 3.97 degrees. Completed in 1372, the tower remains the prize jewel of Pisa, Italy.

Modern-Day Preservation & Restoration

To prevent collapse, engineers conducted extensive remedial work between 1993 and 2001, reducing the tilt of the Leaning Tower of Pisa by 45 cm. Today, the monument is stable, allowing tourists to safely experience this real wonder of engineering.

Local Cuisines

After exploring the Leaning Tower of Pisa, enjoy Italian delicacies in the city of Pisa. Must-try dishes include pappa al pomodoro, ribollita, and cacciucco, a seafood dish inspired by the Arno River.
