Exhibition Introduction
Chapter 1: Beauty and Ugliness
The beautiful men and women in Ito’s works possess an alluring charm that seems to not belong to this world. Sometimes they are as fickle as butterflies dancing among flowers, shamelessly driving those around them into madness; when inner ugliness surfaces, they instantly transform into terrifying monstrosities. This chapter will showcase multiple works, presenting a worldview that later became one of Ito’s important creative characteristics: a bizarre atmosphere where beauty and ugliness coexist, and the narrative charm of interweaving humorous touches throughout the story’s development.
Chapter 2: Fear Lurking in Everyday Life
With wild and imaginative plots and flowing brushstrokes, a unique world is woven. The entrance to fear always quietly lurks within the ordinary everyday. The thorough pursuit of realism and descriptions based on personal experience allow the works to evoke readers’ resonance and imagination, making the stories feel close at hand. Whether it’s distorted and swollen textures or the slimy, viscous feel of a slug, it’s hard not to connect them with one’s own memories.
Chapter 3: Strange Paintings
The title page, symbolizing the beginning of the story, is the entrance to another world. Each painting, integrated into the core theme of the story, arouses readers’ expectations and foreshadows moments of heightened emotion. Furthermore, the sudden, shocking double-page spreads in the story, and the highly complete panel layouts resembling works of art, also constitute one of the important charms of Ito’s works. Those meticulous depictions and elaborate details can only be truly appreciated through the original artwork.
Chapter 4: Junji Ito
From a dental technician to a manga artist, his works still retain the “bizarre yet real” worldview from his creative origins. By reviewing Ito’s life and experiences from childhood to the present, this chapter brings the audience closer to the true face of this manga artist.
Final Chapter
Junji Ito’s highly original works are also highly acclaimed overseas. His works have been translated into over 30 languages and regional versions and have won the American Eisner Awards, known as the “Oscars of comics,” four times. In 2023, he was awarded the Special Honorary Award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France, Europe’s largest comics festival. This exhibition area will introduce Mr. Ito’s publishing achievements and various honors overseas, and simultaneously display the main visual for this exhibition – “Tomie: Cheek Love”.
