Matsumoto Castle Matsumoto Castle is known for its national treasure main keep and is one of Japan’s most iconic ancient castles. Its distinct black and white “Crow Castle” exterior is reflected in the moat, and in spring, it is further enhanced by the blooming of approximately 300 Somei Yoshino cherry trees surrounding it. The cherry blossoms encircle the main keep and reflect on the water, creating a picturesque spring scene. During the day, visitors can enjoy the pink sea of flowers and the magnificent castle, while at night, the illuminated castle presents a romantic “Night Cherry Blossom Crow Castle,” making it Matsumoto’s most popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring.
Takato Castle Site Park (Cherry Blossom Season Limited) Takato Castle Site Park is hailed as the “best cherry blossom spot under heaven,” famous for its approximately 1,500 unique Takato Kohigan cherry trees within the park. The pale pink flowers are small and dense, covering the entire castle ruins like clouds when in full bloom, creating a unique and dreamy spring landscape. The park’s undulating terrain allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of cherry blossoms intertwined with mountains from various angles; the annual cherry blossom festival attracts a large number of tourists. Due to its higher elevation, the blooming season is later than in the plains of Honshu, making it one of Nagano’s most representative cherry blossom viewing spots.
Miso Factory Tour Ishii Miso is a representative brand of Shinshu Miso, using domestic soybeans, spring water from the “Heisei Top 100 Famous Waters” of the Northern Alps, and domestic rice. It adheres to natural brewing and additive-free craftsmanship, resulting in a rich flavor and strong aroma, embodying traditional Edo period techniques. The factory offers internal tours, with on-site explanations of the wooden barrel arrangement, steaming, and fermentation processes, providing an in-depth understanding of the mysteries of miso from raw materials to finished product.
Narai-juku Located in the middle of the Kiso Road in Nagano Prefecture, Narai-juku was one of the most prosperous post towns on the Nakasendo during the Edo period. Due to its long streets and numerous merchants and travelers, it was once known as “Narai Senken” (Narai of a Thousand Houses). The wooden machiya houses and stone-paved streets, preserved intact to this day, showcase a strong Edo-period atmosphere and have been designated as an important traditional building preservation district in Japan.
Strolling through the old streets, visitors can admire traditional Japanese architecture, lattice-windowed machiya, and old folk house shops, experiencing a tranquil and nostalgic atmosphere. Along the way, there are Kiso lacquerware, handicrafts, Japanese-style cafes, and local snacks, allowing for an in-depth experience of the Kiso region's history, culture, and artisan spirit.
The scenery in each season has its unique charm: lush greenery in spring and summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and a more ancient charm with winter snowscapes, making it one of Nagano's most representative historical walking destinations.
Lake Suwa Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture is also considered one of the prototypes for the “Itomori Lake” scene in the popular animated film Your Name. This attracts many travelers and anime enthusiasts to visit. On clear days, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of mountains reflected in the lake, experiencing the unique leisurely and healing atmosphere of Shinshu.
