Here, you can experience the ingenuity of Jiangnan garden design and appreciate the ancient people's interest in living in harmony with nature.
- 【Ancient Temple Chimes】Arrive at Hanshan Temple and listen to the lingering bell sounds, as if time has slowed down. This ancient temple, with a history of thousands of years, is famous for the poem "Maple Bridge Night Mooring." The temple is filled with fragrant smoke, and the architecture is simple and solemn, allowing people to cleanse the dust from their hearts in the Buddhist sounds and comprehend the true meaning of Zen.
- 【Maple Bridge Scenic Spot】Arriving at Maple Bridge, you'll immediately see the single-arch stone bridge spanning the ancient canal, with its simple and elegant shape. Standing by the bridge, recite "The moon sets, crows cry, frost fills the sky; by the maple bridge, fishing lights trouble my sleep," the artistic conception of the past seems to be right in front of you, allowing you to feel the fusion of history and culture.
- 【Suzhou Water Tour】Take a boat tour on the ancient Grand Canal of Suzhou and enjoy the unique style of Suzhou's ancient city on the clear waters. Ancient bridges, pagodas, ancient streets, and ancient alleys along the banks complement each other, and the Jiangnan residential buildings with white walls and black tiles are like a flowing ink painting, showcasing the unique water town style of Suzhou.
- 【Shantang Dream】Stroll along Shantang Street, as if traveling back to the prosperous scene of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. This ancient street, known as "Seven Mile Shantang," is lined with shops and is very lively. Traditional snacks exude a tempting aroma, and unique handicrafts are dazzling, immersing people in Suzhou's history, culture, and urban life.
- In Suzhou, the Humble Administrator's Garden's elegant gardens, Hanshan Temple's lingering bell sounds, Maple Bridge's poetic charm, the ancient Grand Canal's water town scenery, and Shantang Street's bustling urban life together constitute a colorful humanistic picture, leaving people with an unforgettable cultural journey.
What to expect
- Humble Administrator's Garden: Arrive at the Humble Administrator's Garden around 9:00 AM. It is a representative work of classical gardens in Jiangnan. With water as its center, the pavilions and towers in the garden are built along the water, featuring a strong Jiangnan water town characteristic. You can stroll along the winding corridors, admire the exquisite latticed windows, and see different seasonal flowers and plants, experiencing the wonderful scenery that changes with every step.
- Proceed to Hanshan Temple and Have Lunch: Depart from the Humble Administrator's Garden and take transportation to Hanshan Temple. On the way, you can find a local restaurant and taste Suzhou's special delicacies such as Squirrel Mandarin Fish and Sizzling Eels.
- Hanshan Temple and its Detached Courtyard: Arrive at Hanshan Temple, which is famous for the poem "A Night Mooring Near Maple Bridge" by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji. There are many historical sites in the temple, including ancient bells and stone inscriptions. The detached courtyard of Hanshan Temple is relatively quiet, with elegant architectural style and garden landscapes. You can feel the peace and solemnity of Buddhist culture here.
- Maple Bridge: Maple Bridge is a few minutes' walk from Hanshan Temple. Maple Bridge is a semi-circular single-arch stone bridge, 39.6 meters long, 5.27 meters wide, and spans 10 meters. Standing on the bridge, you can almost feel the scene of Zhang Ji's night mooring. Nearby is also the Iron Bell Pass, the only relatively intact relic left by the people of Suzhou in their fight against the Japanese pirates.
- Grand Canal Cruise: Take an antique painted boat at the Maple Bridge pier and sail along the Grand Canal. Along the way, you can admire the ancient buildings and bridges on both sides, feel the charm of the Jiangnan water town, and see the beautiful scenery of the modern city and the ancient canal complementing each other.
- Shantang Street: After the cruise, go to Shantang Street. Shantang Street was built in the Baoli period of the Tang Dynasty and is known as the "No. 1 Street in Gusu." When night falls and the lights are on, Shantang Street is brightly lit. You can stroll along the ancient street, browse the specialty shops, taste snacks such as Plum Blossom Cake and Chinese Flowering Crabapple Cake, or find a tea house or bar and sit down to experience Suzhou's nightlife.
