National Treasure: Former Kaichi School (Nagano)

This pseudo-Western style school building was completed in April 1876 as the new school building for Kaichi School, which opened in May 1873. After being used as a school building until 1963, it was relocated and restored to its current location and became a museum. The school building, which was highly praised as a unique and original creation that conveyed the social conditions of the Meiji Restoration and a symbol of early modern schools, was designated as a national treasure for the first time as a modern school building in 2019. Inside the museum, the charm of the national treasure school building is introduced, and historical educational materials from Kaichi School are exhibited.
