We wanted a ryokan experience so we tried this. We had a hard time checking in as there were no staff to welcome us. Instructions were not clear how to get the key. Good thing that I have a Japanese friend who helped us to call the owner of the ryokan and communicate about our concern. If you are squeamish, don't stay here. Plus the location was uphill, a bit of a challenge to haul heavy luggages and a trek for tired feet. We'd stick with chain hotels next time.
