What to expect

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape. Take a guided tour of the Tae Rak (Lake Condah) wetlands for an overview of the Gunditjmara creation story, the life cycle of Kooyang (eels), and the lake's extensive marine and birdlife. See the extensive aquaculture systems designed to trap and harvest Kooyang (eel) for food and trade, fish traps, and remnants of ancient Aboriginal stone houses.

Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre boardwalk and Jetty

Your Gunditjmara cultural guide will take you on an informative walk around Tae Rak (Lake Condah)

Walk along the boardwalk and out onto the jetty over the lake

The lake is made up of 1,700 hectares of significant wetlands and stony rises next to historic lava flows

Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre kooyang (eel) holding tank

The tour starts at the kooyang (eel) holding tank and an overview of their habitat and lifecycle

Lava flows and kooyang traps on the eastern side of the lake and the network of aquaculture systems

The 2-hour walk is undertaken in two parts
The first hour of the tour is at the Aquaculture Centre building, the eel holding tank, and out on the boardwalk over the lake
This part of the tour is accessible by prams and wheelchairs, and participants with limited mobility
The second hour of the tour takes you down the western side of the lake, and in parts through long grass, and over uneven ground
This part of the tour is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs
For participants with limited mobility, please note that there is no rest areas or seating available during this second hour of the tour
