Ginkaku-ji Temple
At the northern start of the Philosopher's Path, you'll come across Ginkaku-ji Temple, also called the Silver Pavilion. This famous spot was built by a leader named Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa and matches the beautiful Golden Pavilion. As you wander around, you'll see lovely gardens and traditional buildings. The calm vibe makes it a perfect beginning to your journey.
Hakusason-so Villa
Once a private home, the Hakusason-so Villa is now a cool museum. It used to belong to a well-known Japanese painter. Today, it houses the Hashimoto Kansetsu Garden & Museum, filled with interesting old pagodas and tea houses.
Otoyo-jinja
Otoyo-jinja is a delightful shrine famous for two big stone mice at its entrance. These mice are especially loved during the Year of the Rat. It's a fantastic stop to enjoy Japanese spirituality and design
Hōnen-in
Hōnen-in is a charming shrine by the Lake Biwa Canal. Built-in 1680, the shrine has lovely sand art that changes every so often, adding to its enchanting feel. Besides enjoying the peaceful areas, you might see art exhibitions or musical events.
Eikan-dō
At the southern end of the Philosopher's Path, you'll find Eikan-dō, an ancient temple grounds. With lush gardens all around, it offers a serene getaway and amazing views of Kyoto. Wander through the temple grounds and even climb to the rooftops for a great view. It's particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season, an ideal place to begin or end your Philosopher's Path adventure.
