Toyako

The best time to visit Toyako is from May to October for clear lake views, cycling, cruises, and outdoor sightseeing. Winter is quieter and scenic, with snow-covered landscapes and hot springs, but driving conditions require more care.

From Sapporo, take a limited express train to Toya Station, then continue by local bus or taxi to Toyako Onsen. Many travelers also visit by rental car on a Hokkaido route linking Sapporo, Noboribetsu, Lake Toya, and Hakodate.

A car is the easiest way to reach viewpoints, the Usuzan Ropeway, Showa Shinzan, and nearby towns. Without a car, stay in Toyako Onsen, use local buses from Toya Station, and focus on the lake promenade, cruise pier, visitor center, and hotel-area attractions.

Toyako Onsen is the best area for most travelers because it has lakefront hotels, onsen baths, restaurants, the promenade, cruise access, and seasonal fireworks views. Around Toya Station is practical for transit but less atmospheric. Lakeside pensions and countryside stays around the wider Lake Toya area suit travelers with a car who want quieter scenery.
