Had a wonderful tour in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Korea. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly, making the city’s rich history come alive with engaging stories and clear explanations. Kayla Kim especially was very patient and helpful throughout the tour, taking us to good photo spots as well which made the experience even more enjoyable. Really appreciated the effort and would highly recommend this tour!

Sherry and Katrina really took good care of us on this trip, and they were very patient and answered all of our questions! The trip was cold, Gyeongju was really windy, but the tour bus was warm!

Step back into time of the Silla Kingdom with this tour. Our guides, Miss Katrina and Miss Sherry, provided deep insight into the history of the Silla Kingdom and its capital, Gyeongju. The journey is about two hours bus ride from Busan, but our driver skillfully navigated the hills safely with the big bus. The lunch was affordable and delicious at a rest area. The highlight -- Cheomseondae-- did not disappoint and was exactly how the pictures show it. If you like history, this is your tour and Miss Katrina and Sherry are your guides!

Our tour guide, Ethan, was fantastic and amazing! We had him for the 8 hours of this tour. He had great energy, very kind and made sure everyone had a great time. He even waited for my Mother and I to reunite with the group before we headed to the next stop as we ended up getting lost a little bit during free roaming. He made sure we were safe and also had everyone stay comfy and warm as we experienced lots of rain and cold, freezing snow weather throughout halfway of the tour. You’d be lucky to have him as your tour guide if you take this tour. Was worth exploring Gyeongju for our first time!

The Chinese-speaking tour guide, Sherry Li, was very enthusiastic in introducing Korean history and local culture relevant to the itinerary. The weather on Chinese New Year's Eve, February 16, 2026, was actually quite cold. I noticed Sherry's hands were red and swollen from the cold, but she still diligently introduced the cultural history of each attraction. She is truly a very dedicated tour guide. This trip has also helped me understand Korea better, and I am very happy to have participated in such a wonderful group tour. 😊

During student winter break, it's very crowded, with about an hour wait for each activity, but it's a lot of fun 👍. In winter, there's also snow tubing.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Hwangnyongsa Temple was a beacon of state-sponsored Buddhism during the Silla and Unified Silla eras, playing a pivotal role in the spread of Buddhism across Korea. This temple was not just a religious center but also a symbol of the Silla dynasty's power and cultural achievements. Its construction was inspired by a mystical encounter with a yellow dragon, and the temple's nine-story pagoda was instrumental in the unification of the Three Kingdoms. Built under royal patronage, it served as a place for monks to pray for the kingdom's welfare, symbolizing protection from neighboring nations.

Architectural Marvel

The nine-story wooden pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple, designed by the Baekje architect Abiji, was a marvel of its time. This architectural wonder showcased the advanced wooden construction techniques of the era and symbolized Silla's aspirations and influence in East Asia. It was the largest wooden pagoda in East Asia for centuries, reflecting the grandeur and ambition of the Silla Kingdom.

Archaeological Discoveries

The extensive excavations at Hwangnyongsa Temple have unveiled a treasure trove of nearly 40,000 ancient artifacts, including gilt-bronze Buddhist statuettes and Tang China porcelain shards. These discoveries provide a fascinating glimpse into the temple's unique layout and its historical significance in international trade and cultural exchange. Despite the lack of historical clues about the temple's upper design, the site offers an intriguing insight into ancient Korean architecture.
