Gangshan District

The best time to visit Gangshan District is from October to March, when Kaohsiung is usually drier, milder, and more comfortable for walking up Xiaogang Mountain or exploring old streets. April and May are warmer but still manageable, while June to September is hot, humid, and more affected by afternoon storms or typhoons.

Take a TRA train to Gangshan Station from Kaohsiung Main Station, Tainan, or other stops on Taiwan’s west coast rail corridor. Travelers arriving by high-speed rail can transfer at THSR Zuoying Station to TRA or local transport toward Gangshan.

Gangshan’s core is best explored by taxi, local bus, scooter, or bike, depending on the attraction. Xiaogang Mountain and reservoir viewpoints are easier by taxi or self-drive, while the old street area around the station is manageable on foot.

Stay near Gangshan Station for the easiest rail access and local food, or stay in Zuoying if you want faster THSR connections and more hotel choices. Central Kaohsiung is better for first-time visitors who want nightlife, harbor attractions, and MRT convenience, with Gangshan as a day trip.
