You’ve got a free day in Sydney, a beach in mind, and a small dread of Bondi on a summer Saturday. Coogee Beach is where locals point you instead. It’s a sheltered, family-friendly bay on the Sydney eastern suburbs coast, with ocean pools at one end and a café and pub scene along the front.
It’s more relaxed than Bondi, but it never feels sleepy. You can swim in calm water in the morning, snorkel a marked underwater trail, walk the clifftops and be on a rooftop with a cold drink by the arvo. This guide covers the best things to do in Coogee, how to reach it from the middle of Sydney, and when to go.

The beach: calm water and a lazy pace

Coogee Beach feels like a small beach town that happens to sit inside a city. Wedding Cake Island offshore takes the edge off the swell, which makes this one of the calmer Sydney beaches, and the grassy slope behind the sand is where everyone spreads out a picnic rug. Swim between the red and yellow flags when the lifeguards are on.
Surf isn’t the draw here, and that’s the point. If you do want to stand up on a board, Bondi’s small group surf lesson costs from 99 AUD and includes the wetsuit and board, though it meets at North Bondi, so it’s a separate trip. Weighing up other beach days? Manly is Sydney’s other classic beach suburb, and it’s a ferry ride away.

The ocean pools: Wylie’s Baths, McIver’s Ladies Baths and Giles Baths

Three ocean pools sit within a short stroll of the sand, and each has its own mood. Wylie’s Baths is the best known: a tidal pool cut into the rocks in 1907, with a timber deck, a small café and entry at 6.50 AUD. It’s open 7am to 7pm in the warmer months (November to April), but big swell can make the water lumpy, so check conditions before you pay.
Address: Wylie’s Baths, Neptune Street, Coogee NSW 2034
McIver’s Ladies Baths sits just before Wylie’s on the coastal path and is open to women and children only, with a small gate fee. Giles Baths, at the northern end of the beach, is the rawer option: a rocky natural pool where waves wash straight in. Go there for a quick dip, not laps.

Gordons Bay: snorkel an underwater trail

Sydney has one snorkelling trail with its own plaques, and it’s a short walk north of Coogee. Gordons Bay is a small cove between Clovelly Beach and Coogee, with a self-guided underwater nature trail of about 600 metres. It’s a chain of concrete drums with signs naming the marine life, and the loop takes around 40 minutes. On a clear day you might spot blue gropers, cuttlefish and rays, so bring your own mask and snorkel.
There are two catches. Gordons Bay has no lifeguards or car park, and you reach it on foot down steep steps, so go on a calm day and skip it after big swell. Clovelly Beach is the easier backup, with concrete steps into the water and plenty of fish. Prefer a guide? The Manly snorkel tour is 125 AUD for up to 3 hours at Shelly Beach and includes a guided walk.

The Bondi to Coogee walk: 6 km of clifftop beaches

This is the walk most people have in mind when they search for things to do in Coogee. The Bondi to Coogee walk is about 6 km one way and takes 2 to 3 hours with swim stops. Start at Bondi Beach and head south past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay, then finish on Coogee’s grassy foreshore. Walk it in that direction so you end beside the water with a cold drink within reach.
Wear proper shoes, because there are plenty of steps, and the steep climb near Gordons Bay is the toughest bit. There are drinking fountains at every beach, so one water bottle will do.
Not keen on 6 km? The half day sightseeing tour runs 3 hours from 153 AUD with hotel pick-up and passes Tamarama and Bronte. The catch is you get just 30 minutes at Bondi, and it doesn’t visit Coogee.
Klook Tip: Pack swimmers and a towel in a small bag. You’ll pass five beaches and a few ocean pools, and you’ll want to stop at least once.

Getting to Coogee Beach and what to know first

Coogee sits about 9 km from the CBD, and public transport is the easiest way in.
    • Bus: Catch the 374 from Central Station (Eddy Avenue). It takes about 30 minutes and costs around 4 AUD with Opal or a contactless card.
    • Light rail: Take the L2 to Randwick (about 18 minutes from Central), then a short bus down to the beach.
    • From the airport: Take the train to Central, then change to the 374.
    • By car: It’s a 15 to 30 minute drive, but street parking near the beach is limited and fills fast on summer weekends.
Routes shift, so check the Transport for NSW trip planner on the day.
Klook Tip: Check the last 374 back to the city before you settle in for sunset drinks.
Flying in for a weekend? Melbourne and Brisbane are both about 1.5 hours from Sydney by direct flight, Perth is around 4, and Coogee is one of the easiest beach days in Australia to add on. Pair it with Watsons Bay on the harbour side, and sketch the rest of your trip with our guide to two days in Sydney.
When you go changes the crowd, so here’s how the months stack up:
    • December to February: Peak beach season, with the warmest weather and the biggest crowds. NSW summer school holidays run 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027.
    • March and early April: Warm, with fewer people, which makes it the sweet spot. Easter (26 to 29 March 2027) and the autumn school holidays (12 to 23 April 2027) are busier.
    • July and late September to October: Cooler and quieter on the sand. Winter holidays are 5 to 16 July 2027, and spring holidays are 27 September to 8 October 2027.

    Where to eat and drink

Coogee Pavilion is the one everyone mentions. Locals call it the Pav, and it fills an old beachfront building at the northern end of the sand, with pizza and a games room downstairs and an adults-only rooftop with sea views. Book ahead on weekends, since it gets loud and full.
Address: Coogee Pavilion, 169 Dolphin Street, Coogee NSW 2034
For coffee and brekkie, head to the café strip on Arden Street, which runs along the beachfront. After dark, Coogee Bay Hotel on Coogee Bay Road is a big pub that often has live music.
A rough day out looks like this: about 8 AUD for the bus both ways, 6.50 AUD for Wylie’s Baths, around 5 AUD for a coffee and about 30 AUD for a pizza at the Pav. That’s roughly 50 AUD before drinks, and far less with a picnic. For more ways to stretch your budget, see our guide to budget things to do in Sydney.
