Khao San Road, or Thanon Khao San, is one of Bangkok’s most legendary streets. Travelers from all over the world come here to experience the culture and entertainment and drink beer with strangers.  Known as the backpacker capital of the world, this bustling street offers everything from fashion, street food, bars, tattoo parlors, and market stalls selling everything under the sun. But behind its lively energy lies a shopping experience that can overwhelm even the most seasoned shopper. If you’re heading to Thailand soon, Khao San Road is an adventure you certainly don’t wanna miss (just be sure you’re ready for it).

    When to Visit

Khao San Road (also spelled as Khaosan Road) is open year-round, but the atmosphere changes with the season. The most comfortable time to visit is during Bangkok’s cool, dry season (Nov–Feb), when the crowds are lively and the weather’s breezy. Bangkok heats up during summer from March to May, but April’s Songkran Festival turns Khao San into one big water fight. If you’re on a budget, the rainy season (Jun–Oct) means cheaper stays and smaller crowds, though you’ll need an umbrella for those afternoon showers.

Khao San’s pretty much a night owl personified. Stalls and food carts start opening around 5 to 6 PM. But from 7 PM onward, the street turns into full party mode with a backpacker buzz that lasts until late (or rather early in the morning).
Klook Tip: If you’re planning to shop, you might want to visit around or before sunset, before the crowd builds up. If you’re up for it, hang around as Khao San flips into party mode.

    Getting There

Luckily, Khao San is centrally located in Bangkok and accessible via multiple routes. But unlike Bangkok’s main malls, it doesn’t sit directly along the BTS Skytrain or MRT lines—so you’ll need to do a little extra navigating. Here are your best options:

    By Grab or Taxi

The fastest and most convenient way is to book a Grab or catch a taxi and just tell the driver “Khao San Road.” They’ll know exactly where to take you, though traffic can be heavy during peak hours.
Klook Tip: Ask drivers to turn on the meter or negotiate a fair rate beforehand.

    By Bus

Fresh out the plane? Take the airport bus to Khaosan!
Budget traveler? The airport buses are your best bet. From Suvarnabhumi, the S1 bus (60 THB, $2.84 AUD) goes straight to Democracy Monument, a short walk from Khao San. From Don Mueang, the A4 bus (50 THB, $2.37 AUD) runs a similar route. Both are air-conditioned, cheap, and luggage-friendly.
Already in the city? Local buses like the 2, 15, 47, and 59 all stop near Banglamphu. Fares are cheaper, but they can be crowded and tricky for first-timers—especially if you don’t speak Thai.

Explore the city with a hop-on-and-off bus tour!
For a more comfortable and sightseeing-friendly option, consider the Bangkok Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour. It’s air-conditioned, covers all the main attractions, including Khao San Road, and lets you explore the city at your own pace.

    By Riverboat

Want the real traveler’s trick? From Saphan Taksin BTS, hop on the Chao Phraya Express Boat and get off at Phra Arthit Pier. Then, you can take a 10-minute walk to Khao San. It’s fast, scenic, and way more relaxing than being stuck on the road.
    By Tuk-tuk

Hold on tight, this tuk-tuk’s gonna be a bumpy ride!
For something a little more upbeat (and very Bangkok), ride a tuk-tuk. Expect a bumpy, noisy, and fun ride—a quintessential Thai experience. But don’t forget to agree on the fare before hopping in!
And if your itinerary includes other places, you can even try a tuk-tuk riding tour in Bangkok to save you time.
Klook Tip: To stay connected as you navigate your way through the city, consider getting an eSIM for Thailand so you don’t have to worry about finding Wi-Fi hotspots while exploring.

Khao San is lined with tattoo studios ranging from traditional Thai bamboo parlors to modern machine shops. But do make sure to do your homework and research the studios in advance to ensure safety, hygiene, and quality before you make the commitment.
Klook Tip: Keep in mind that bamboo tattoos (Sak Yant) carry deep cultural and spiritual meaning. If you’re tempted to get one done, make sure to choose a reputable studio or temple.

    Shopping Survival Tips

The Khao San Road Market can be quite overwhelming, so keep these tips in mind:
    • Shop Responsibly: It’s easy to overspend when everything looks cheap. Decide on a daily allowance before going. Keep in mind that many stalls sell the same items, so we recommend walking around first before settling on a price.
    • Bargain Wisely: Haggling is part of the fun. Start low, be confident, and meet vendors in the middle. Bring Cash & Pack Light: Most stalls don’t accept cards. Bring small bills to avoid overpaying, and use a money belt or crossbody bag to keep your valuables close and protected.
    • Explore Side Streets: The main strip is crowded, but small lanes around Khao San often hide quieter stalls and boutique shops.
    • Stay Hydrated: If you’ll be out the whole day, make sure to always have bottled water on hand.
