Our hotel was outside the Old Town area, but we booked this tour because it offered pickup over a wide range. We participated as a family of two adults and three children (ages 3, 8, and 11). We shared the ride with two other groups, but it was a smooth experience. The day before, we received a confirmation email letting us know which car would pick us up. The cooking portion was for two adults, and the children helped the adults cook or wandered around when they got bored, as there was a chicken coop and a large garden nearby. The children received a set meal that included drinks, a rice plate similar to fried rice, and a mango with sweet sticky rice plate. The two adult portions we cooked were quite substantial, and our family was full after sharing them with the children. Other group members also shared one adult portion between two people. The assistants received the same menu as our children, and the quantity seemed sufficient. We adults each wanted to cook our own dishes, so we requested that, but some people took turns cooking, which might be a good option for couples. The instructor was kind and very easy to understand, even showing consideration for our children. The venue was truly stress-free and allowed us to relax. The food was delicious, the environment was pleasant, and our family of five thoroughly enjoyed it.
Grandmas house is an amazing morning activity out! it was incredibly well organized, professional, everything was well timed, the food and ingredients were delicious, well explained and it was fun seeing the gardens, produce and feeding the chickens. Highly recommend for a brilliant morning in Chiang Mai!!
My cooking class with Natalie in Chiang Mai, while traveling solo, was truly meaningful! They picked me up and dropped me off at the hotel, and we visited a local market that I wouldn't have been able to access easily on my own. It was fascinating and fun to learn about ingredients and spices that I had never seen before. Grandma's Cooking School's garden and farm were also very well-maintained and beautiful. The afternoon session was held indoors in an air-conditioned space, which was so cool and comfortable. We cooked a dish, ate it, and then cooked another dish and ate that one, with the staff neatly cleaning up for the next session during our meals. The food was delicious, and it was a great experience to cook it myself! After all the cooking classes were over, the fun didn't stop there; Natalie gave me a tour of the garden and farm, explaining various herbs, flowers, and crops, and even letting me hold a chicken from the coop... it was a perfect experience in every way. Absolutely the best!
Due to my itinerary, I only chose a morning class. The pickup guide diligently confirmed the attendance throughout. First, we went to the local market where the instructor introduced various spice products. Then, we toured the entire kitchen facility and saw the instructor explain the different ingredients grown in the garden. We even took photos with the chickens in the coop. The whole property was beautiful and spacious. The instructors were kind and friendly, and their explanations were thorough and detailed. Finally, we made three local Thai specialty dishes, and the provided drinks and food were delicious. It was a very enjoyable cooking class experience!
This is arguably the best and most interesting experience in Chiang Mai. From browsing the market to learn about Thai sauces and curries, to the entire cooking process, it was all incredibly fun! Our instructor, Roger, was witty, humorous, and professional, teaching us with great care and detail. I feel like I'll want to recreate some of these dishes myself once I'm back home. The other staff members were also very responsible, quietly preparing ingredients for everyone and cleaning the kitchen while we ate. I definitely need to do this again next time I visit!
The pick up services were so convenient! The school environment was so nice. You can learn a lot in the schools cause they grow their own farms. The flexibility of opting different style of cuisine was so friendly. The staff and people were so nice.
Extremely detailed walk through of each cooking step… you could personalise the spiciness to your tastes and it was a very beautiful garden. Our mentor for the day introduced to us each plant we would use in their garden… very fresh! i recommend it to any foodie visiting chiangmai and would like to learn a to cook a dish or two. A carpool van is also sent to your hotel to pick you up and drop you off. Chatted with the people who took the class with us, overall a great experience! (I would recommend you use less palm sugar when you make your own mango sticky rice though haha)
Brilliant! Our cooking class teacher, Roger, was amazing! His high energy, jokes and magic tricks kept us entertained while learning a lot of new cooking skills. Thank you, Roger, for a fantastic day! The food was delicious and I liked that we were given a short tour around the farm to learn about ingredients we would then use. All ingredients and utensils were provided and they cater for vegetarians :) I highly recommend this activity! The only negative is that the morning market was a bit pointless - we received a 10 minute talk but it was incredibly crowded and noisy and then we had 15 mins to explore the small market and grab a coffee; everyone in our group was finished early so we headed off early; felt more like a stop to take photos for instagram lol and I would’ve skipped it if possible. Everything else was great! The welcome drink was delicious.
Thank you to the Thai teacher who speaks Chinese. The Thai cooking class I attended this time was a fantastic overall experience! The teacher was very friendly, and the steps were clear, making it easy to follow along even for someone who doesn't cook often. From learning about ingredients and spices to actually preparing the dishes, I felt very involved. The Thai food I made was more delicious than I expected, and being able to adjust the spice and sweet-and-sour levels to my own taste was truly rewarding. The class atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable, making it perfect for couples, friends, or even solo travelers. It felt like more than just eating a meal; it was like truly bringing the taste of Thailand home. I highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Chiang Mai—it's both fun and memorable! The cooking class felt more like stepping into real Thai life than just visiting tourist attractions.
I participated in the Northern Thai cooking full-day tour. Since most people signed up for the half-day tour, our class only had four people, with two Americans joining us. The instructor spoke English, accompanied by a Chinese translator, which made us feel very well taken care of 👍. We started with an introduction to the environment, followed by an explanation of all the ingredients. We cooked everything over charcoal, and the aroma was truly wonderful. We prepared all the ingredients ourselves, and then enjoyed all the dishes together at the end. The time management was also excellent. I highly recommend this experience to anyone interested.
