What to expect
The 38th “Shirakawago Winter Illumination Event” in 2024 is coming soon! As a world heritage site and an important traditional architectural reserve, Shirakawa-go is a very well-known and beautiful tourist destination for Japanese people. Although you can visit it on a regular basis, the lighting activities of Shirakawa-go are only held 6 times a year. A precious event that you cannot participate in without making a reservation in advance. The scenery of thatched cottage villages with snowy scenery is romantic and mysterious. It is a must-see tourist attraction in Gifu Prefecture!

From a long time ago, I have longed to see the illuminations of Shirakawago. The scenery on the day of the event was beautiful and well worth spending a day there. The tour guide also explained carefully.
This trip is okay, but not cheap. It costs more than NT$5,000. It does not include meals and cannot go to the observation deck. I think it’s not worth it!
You can have lunch by yourself during your stay in Takayama. You have plenty of time to stay in Gassho Village. It’s such a beautiful place. I really enjoyed this trip!

We participated in the lighting day and arrived at Shirakawa-go at about 3 o'clock. The tour guide said that our tickets allowed us to go up to the observatory to see the lights, so there was no need to rush up there. As a result, when we were about to go to the observatory at about 4 o'clock, we were told by the staff that our tickets could only be used in the village and not to the observatory. It was very disappointing. The long-awaited viewing of the observatory lights did not come true. After calling the tour guide, he confirmed that our tickets turned out not to allow us to go to the observation deck. We had no choice but to go to the 2nd floor of Wada’s house to watch the lanterns.

The driver was very nice. He drove a little faster, so the vibration in the back seat was very strong😅The car was super small and not friendly to those over 170cm tall, but the trip was fun. I hope I can send a bus next time, otherwise it would be really painful.
First of all, this trip does not have a tour guide, it is very similar to a trip taken privately by other private companies! We set off in a 9-seater car. The driver WYS was from Mainland China and he was still changing the departure time at 7 o'clock in the morning. He drove too fast the whole way with no regard for driving safety! The focus is on using mobile phones all the time and not driving safely at all! When I got off the bus, I was very vague when asked about the meeting time! Gassho Village starts lighting up lights at 5:30, and we say we need to gather at 6:30 for the return trip (the gathering place is far from the lighting venue and we need to transfer to a shuttle bus). Does that mean we have to leave after lighting up? I advise everyone to rather purchase itineraries from local travel agencies in Japan in the future rather than shopping for KLOOK, which is like a private transfer itinerary! The price is three times more expensive than lighting a lamp!
