What to expect

It's about "volume"! It's about "presence"! It's about "happiness"!

This summer's most therapeutic art feast, overturning preconceived notions of beauty.

— Must-See Highlights —

🌟 "Round and plump" is my golden signature!

🌟 Unique expansive aesthetics, breaking away from conventional art frameworks.

🌟 Happy and therapeutic, over a hundred "heavyweight" works debut in Taiwan.

The full brushwork style, with volume proportions that defy convention, not only makes figures appear round and plump, but also causes animals and fruits to expand. Such exaggerated yet heartwarming paintings are the classic artworks of Colombian art master Fernando Botero. He once said: “I don’t paint fat, but rather a celebration of volume!” His unique artistic expression has made him one of the most distinctive and influential artists of our time. This “The Magic of Roundness: Botero Special Exhibition” will present the rich facets of Botero’s work, covering oil paintings, drawings, watercolors, and three-dimensional sculptures, bringing together a total of 118 pieces. We invite the audience to experience the infinite charm of round and therapeutic art this summer.

⭐ About Fernando Botero

About Botero

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia, in 1932. In his early years, he traveled to Europe to study the works of Spanish masters and research the Italian Renaissance, laying the foundation for his art. He advocated that "beauty in art originates from the glorification of volume" and developed a unique style. His works depict figures, animals, and still lifes in abundant forms. Beneath the seemingly simple surface lies a profound understanding of art history, as well as a spirit that pursues perfection in lines, colors, and composition. Botero has created countless classics over seventy years and insists on completing every piece by hand. His works are collected in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and his sculptures made him the first artist in the world to be invited to exhibit on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, leaving a rich and grand artistic legacy for the world, continuously inspiring modern art.

— Exhibition Areas —

⭐ Latin American Style (Latin America)

Botero's art is deeply rooted in his life experiences in Colombia. After encountering Mexican art in 1956, he delved deeper into Latin American concerns, incorporating the vibrant street colors and rich cultural life of his hometown into his creations. Musicians, nuns, and those in power, as well as daily life, all became sources of his inspiration. With humorous and delicate brushstrokes, he creates unique meanings through exaggerated proportions.

⭐ Still Life Series (Still Life)

"The simplest forms are often the hardest to depict." Botero's unique style originated from his still life creations. The mandolin he painted in his youth, by deliberately shrinking the sound hole, created an effect where the body seemed to expand outwards. This led him to rethink the relationship between object proportion and volume, establishing his classic rounded aesthetic. From then on, his "volume" language gradually took shape, permeating all his subjects.

⭐ Bullfight & Circus (Bullfight & Circus)

The brief experience of being sent to a bullfighting school in his youth, and the dramatic colors and tense atmosphere of the bullring, influenced Botero, prompting him to create a series of watercolors on the theme of bullfighting. The traveling circus he encountered in Mexico also became one of his painting subjects. Although the acrobats and clown performers in his paintings are full of dynamism, they subtly convey the unique melancholy of ordinary people within their vivid presence, adding an internal emotional depth to the entire series beyond the joy.

⭐ Homage to Classics and Religious Themes (Versions & Religion)

From a young age, Botero pursued excellence through dialogue with the works of masters. His early experiences in Europe led him to create a series of works paying homage to art giants in his unique style. Regardless of the original artist, the final presentation always clearly shows Botero's style – as he said: "Art is saying the same thing in different ways." For Botero, religion is not about dogma, but about exploring form, color, and atmosphere, reinterpreting and challenging existing norms with humor and irony, with his series of female saints being particularly prominent.

⭐ Diverse Media and Three-Dimensional Sculpture (Mixed Media & Sculpture)

In addition to oil painting, Botero also used various media such as pencil, watercolor, charcoal, and pastels. In his hands, his drawings are not just sketches but complete works, demonstrating precision of line and sensuality of form. Botero began exploring sculpture in 1973, giving three-dimensional form to the beauty of volume. For him, art belongs to public spaces, and he hoped his sculptures would bring a more direct and concrete aesthetic experience, bridging the gap between art and people.
