What to expect
Embark on a one-day trip to the Sea of Japan from Kyoto, combining magnificent seascapes, local delicacies, and railway charm. Along the way, pass by the Shirahige Shrine's torii gate, standing on the shores of Lake Biwa as if floating on water, and admire Japan's iconic lakeside scenery.
Next, head to the Mikata Goko (Five Lakes of Mikata), renowned as one of "Japan's 100 Landscapes." Take the Rainbow Line cable car up to the mountaintop park, located at an altitude of approximately 400 meters, to take in the spectacular panoramic view of the five lakes intertwined with the azure Sea of Japan, and experience the natural beauty that changes with the seasons.
At noon, visit the Sea of Japan Fish Market, where you can savor fresh seafood, seafood bowls, sushi, and various Fukui specialties, fully enjoying the rich seafood feast of the Sea of Japan.
In the afternoon, proceed to Nishi-Maizuru Station and board the "Aomatsu-go" train, known as the "Sea Railway," which slowly travels along the Kyoto Tango coast. The train traverses the clear blue coastline, passing over the famous Yura River Bridge, appearing as if it's running on the sea. This offers a healing view where the sea and sky merge into one, making it a classic route not to be missed by railway enthusiasts and photographers.
Finally, arrive at Amanohashidate, one of Japan's Three Scenic Views. You can freely visit Chion-ji Temple, a historic temple famous for prayers for academic success and wisdom, or take the Amanohashidate cable car up to the observation deck to overlook the pine-covered sandbar that stretches across Miyazu Bay like a flying dragon, admiring the magnificent "Hiryu-kan" (Flying Dragon View) scenery, bringing this journey to the Sea of Japan's scenic wonders to a perfect close.
