Traveler reviews
I'd like to share my personal experience from a trip I took in June. It was incredibly difficult to book tickets for the Colosseum through the official website, so I spent a long time searching on a platform before I found this tour. Initially, I wanted a tour with a live guide, but the group fees were too expensive. So, I opted for a package that included an app-based audio guide instead (because my trip was planned at the last minute). This tour doesn't have a live guide. When you arrive at the site, you scan a QR code, and a Chinese-language tour guide (you need to download the POP guide app beforehand) will be available on your phone. The process involves arriving early at a shop near the Colosseum to exchange your voucher with a staff member. They will give you a physical ticket and the QR code for the audio guide. Once you have your ticket, you can head to the Colosseum. Since there's a scheduled entry time, you can arrive 15 minutes early, which is roughly your admission time. Look for staff members wearing yellow vests at the entrance, and after entering, you'll go through a security check. Although the platform mentioned skip-the-line access, I visited on a weekday and didn't have to wait long in line, only for the security check. (Customer service confirmed that this package does include skip-the-line service after the security check). After exploring the Colosseum, you can take a break outside before re-entering the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. (These have different entrances; there are three entrances to choose from here). It took me about 4-5 hours to walk through all three areas; they are truly vast. Overall, I think it was a good experience, and the customer service from the official platform was quite responsive when I communicated with them previously. Additionally, I've included my previous conversation with customer service below, where I had questions about this package. I didn't understand what "does not include the arena floor" meant at first, and customer service clarified it for me. You might find it helpful: "Does not include the arena floor" means you cannot walk to the very center of the arena, the ground level where gladiators used to fight. The main difference between the two options is the "viewing location": Your package (without the arena floor): You stand in the spectator stands (1st-2nd levels) and get a bird's-eye view of the entire interior of the arena and the underground area. This offers the most magnificent photo angles. Package with the arena floor: You can also walk onto the central wooden stage. So, even though my package didn't include walking onto the central stage (it was cheaper...), I could still see the entire Colosseum, which I thought was great. Just wanted to share that for your reference.
The most convenient part of buying tickets through Klook is being able to use the e-ticket directly for entry upon arrival. There's a security check before entering, and the process is very smooth. This package included access to Palatine Hill, the Roman Forum, and the arena floor platform inside the Colosseum (there's a platform you can enter for photos), as well as the first and second levels, and an audio guide app. The full entry package allows you to see many exhibits, including the Roman Emperor's palace on the hill and ancient Roman churches. The exhibition content inside is very rich. With the audio guide, you can walk and listen, learning a lot about the historical background of the ancient Roman Empire, and the Colosseum's 'past and present' – from its construction and peak to its eventual ruin. Standing on the arena floor platform, overlooking the entire underground structure, you can imagine the scenes of gladiators and wild beasts competing in ancient times.
We enjoyed the guided tour of the Colosseum which allowed us to understand its history, culture and functions so much better than we would have if we had gone without a guide. highly recommend getting a guide to get the best experience when visiting the Colosseum. The only issue was a slight confusion due to the tour company's (Towns of Italy) automated message system which told us to assemble at 3pm at a different location when we were supposed to meet directly at the Colosseum at 4.45pm.
really good to see the sites, we had access into the Super sites and arena floor. make sure you are on time to the entrance tents, there is 3 stages u have to go through to get in with security and passport checks etc. Lots of walking required especially for the Roman forum.
The Colosseum entrance is near the Arch of Constantine, directly across from the Roman Forum. You'll need to enter according to your reserved time (you can start entering 15 minutes prior). Entry requires a passport check for identification and a security screening. You can visit the first and second floors, and it's very large and magnificent inside! The entrance to the Roman Forum is opposite the Colosseum entrance. Security screening is also required to enter there, and you can see ruins from 2,000 years ago, which is truly impressive.
We fully enjoyed all these 3 spots! You can enter Foro Romano and Colle Palatino anytime so I recommend you start from morning because these 2 are huge and have lots to see & taking beautiful pictures!
Our tour guide, Xiao Xue, was very responsible and enthusiastic! The entire 3-hour tour was engaging from start to finish. For a history-heavy itinerary like this, the explanations were incredibly interesting and detailed! She even took us to great photo spots and helped us take pictures. Also, a friendly reminder: when booking through Klook, please make sure to use the name exactly as it appears on your passport to avoid being denied entry by arena staff due to a name mismatch during identity verification.
I arrived about 30 minutes early and waited, but since others had written in reviews that they wouldn't let you in until the last minute, I took pictures and killed time around the area. However, when I went back 10 minutes before the start, I was able to get in smoothly without waiting! It didn't seem like they were particularly strict about the timing. I think it's convenient to print out your ticket and keep it handy, but mobile tickets on your phone are also perfectly fine!
