What To Expect

At the base of a scenic valley, Arima Onsen, Japan's most famous hot spring town, lies deep in the north of the Rokko Mountain range behind Kobe city. It is the oldest onsen (hot spring) town in Japan, founded 1300 years ago. Since the days of old, it has been well known as a timeless spa resort where Emperors, court nobles, samurai, and other great minds visited. Furthermore, the town's classic Japanese architecture and its numerous historical temples, shrines, and houses have fortunately been well preserved and make a great place to stroll through some of Japan's oldest streets and to take a dip it some ancient hot springs at the fantastic Taikou-no-yu spa. With access from Kansai International Airport and Kyoto within two hours, Arima Onsen makes for a great day trip with convenient access to the nearby cities.

We enjoyed our day at the Taikounoyu Spa. This is a large complex with facilities not only for the onsen but also massage and body scrub treatments, restaurants & food halls and just lounging around. It would be easy to enjoy a full day here. It's a 90 minute train ride from Osaka, far enough to escape the hustle & bustle of the city and enjoy the quiet mountainside. We went on a Sunday in late July half expecting the onsen to be crowded. Perhaps because of remoteness or the privacy of the more expensive Taikounoyu spa, it was not crowded at all. Nice! For 600 yen more we opted for the Klook package which included the Fish spa, Sauna & ice cream. We didn't use the sauna (altho there seems to be an free sauna in the bath area, no not sure what this additional feature was) but did try the 10 minute Fish Spa (which felt weird) and enjoyed the ice cream. I don't think the package was worth it& would recommend the basic package. You can buy the ice cream for approx 332

Really good facility and have all our needs. But there was no shared bath to spend time with my girlfriend. But!! still can be relaxed and food is good.

The staff seems not familiar with e-pass of klook, time is needed to search the reservation. Overall service and the hot spring are both good

The hot spring are marvel especially the brown color one. They have excellent bathing facilities especially the outdoor ones. It was refreshing to eat an ice cream after a hot bath a good relax nap at the relaxation room :)

Good onsen but the climb up the hill to the spa area was slightly steep. Recommended to take the shuttle bus but take note of the timing of the bus cause the interval is very long ._.

The only Onsen that open until late 11pm. Big area. Really enjoyable and relax.

Highly recommended activity when you're in kobe. Onsen frequented by locals. And there are restaurants and massage areas and fish spa in the vicinity. Easily can spend half a day here

Great place for onsen lover! Nice and quiet environment. You don't have to bring anything to there. They provide everything you need like hair dryer, shampoo and towel. Will definitely go back again!
