Visit the 7 Hells, it's definitely worth the detour. No guide needed. Each hell has its own unique feature. You can collect stamps in each of the Hells and, most importantly, you can enjoy a foot bath in several of them. It's worth a full day (about 6 hours). I started with the two outlying ones, then had a lunch break (Jigoku meguri, a typical dish), and then finished the other five which are close to each other. Incredible!

The different colored hot springs provided a very wonderful experience. I observed the bubbling hot gray mud, a red lake, and beautiful blue hot springs. It was a dazzling sight to see many different colored hot springs. It can be a bit crowded, but I bought a few souvenirs, especially the Umi Jigoku face mask, and local Oita delicious pudding and sweets.

It's an incredible experience, if you have the chance, come. You'll have to walk a lot, but it's totally worth it. Plus, they'll give you a brochure where you can collect stamps from each 'hell'.

It was an advantage for me to get tickets on the Klook app. We went to the museum at 2 PM and there was a long queue for on-the-spot tickets. However, we just presented our printed voucher to the staff and then, off we went! It was so smooth because we had our ticket and printed it in advance. We really enjoyed the view; the weather was nice, a sunny day. Great experience!

Book this one to get access to all 7 Beppu Hells hot springs. You can buy tickets at the door for 2000 Y, so booking here isn't a saving, just convenient. You have to redeem it for the voucher booklet anyway; the line is separate and will be faster, though. We recommend at least 4 hours to visit all 7 if you want to relax and take a footbath at 4 of them (the other 3 don't have footbaths), eat the onsen eggs and pudding, and shop at Umi Jigoku or Chinoike Jigoku, as they have the biggest product range.
