Construído por Terasawa Shima-no-kami Hirotaka, um vassalo de Toyotomi Hideyoshi, ao longo de sete anos a partir de 1602, diz-se que materiais das ruínas do Castelo de Nagoya foram usados em sua construção. O castelo, juntamente com sua praia de areia e pinhal circundantes, se assemelha a um guindaste abrindo suas asas, o que lhe rendeu o apelido de "Castelo do Guindaste Dançante".
O castelo foi o lar de vários senhores feudais de vários clãs, incluindo Terasawa, Okubo, Matsudaira, Doi, Mizuno e Ogasawara. Inicialmente, o Castelo de Karatsu não tinha um tenshukaku (torre principal), mas foi adicionado em 1966 como uma instalação cultural e turística.
Dentro do tenshukaku, há um museu de história local que exibe materiais do Domínio de Karatsu e exposições como cerâmica Karatsu ware, oferecendo aos visitantes um vislumbre da história da região.

We visited to see the cherry blossoms, but it was snowing that day, so there was no chance to see them. At least there was one beautiful tree with flowers, so I could still take nice photos with the castle. I think it will be so beautiful there once the cherry blossoms bloom. 🌸

The castle features an observation deck offering panoramic views of Karatsu city and the magnificent seascape. In spring, the cherry blossoms around the castle are in full bloom, making it a popular spot for flower viewing. Additionally, the castle's museum displays a wealth of historical materials and artifacts, allowing you to delve deep into the history and culture of Karatsu.
Karatsu Castle is beautiful. Wisteria flowers are in full bloom at the end of April. There is a fee to take the elevator. The restrooms are clean and bright. It's very windy on the top floor, but the view is beautiful.

The view from the observation deck is beautiful, and there are lovely maple leaves along the way. You can enter by simply scanning a QR code. However, the only public transport available is the bus, and services are infrequent, so please be mindful of the schedule.
