ラフォーレ箱根強羅　湯の棲 (Laforet Hakone Gora Yunosumika)

I was in Japan for two weeks and stayed at 6 different hotels/ryokans. This was the most expensive place I booked because I wanted a relaxing experience, kaiseki meal and a private onsen. However, I found the place disappointing. The hand-held shower was dirty and had black mold. The washlet wasn’t working properly and the food was underwhelming. The servers at the restaurant weren’t helpful. They don’t even bother explaining the food they’re serving or tell you how to eat it. They also served us plain rice by mistake once, I was confused but started eating anyway. A minute later the server came back and took it back. The front desk staff speak good English, but they lack warmth and hospitality. The girl gave me a piece of paper asking whether or not I want room cleaning. I marked “no room cleaning” since i was only staying for two nights. But the girl asked me what time I would like the cleaning done?? I was confused. Then she told that because i had a private bath my room required cleaning. Weird, but i just said ok. It felt like they were just rushing to check me in.

Booked only for one night. Wished we would have booked for another stay. Beautiful property. Utilize the free shuttle available from the train station to the hotel. Don’t attempt to walk especially if carrying luggage as there are steep hills. You will be asked to remove your shoes before entering hotel so make sure you have decent socks on as this is a shoeless property.

Large rooms, had an unseen in the room which was a huge treat. Super helpful stuff and delicious breakfast. Recommended!!

Host very friendly and serviceable. Very peaceful and calm. It has a beautiful spa included in the package. Restaurant at venue as well

The room and facility were wonderful. I just wish there’s an easier way to get there.

Love love love this hotel! I stayed in the annex with my own private bath on the balcony overlooking the mountains. The room was spacious and impeccably designed. The only thing that needs to be changed is the floorboards, as they are peeling apart everywhere. Also, the bed was not very comfortable. I had half-board, so breakfast and dinner were included. Breakfast was a lovely buffet with both Japanese and western breakfast items. Dinner was a fixed 5-course menu. Dinner tried to be elevated, but just missed the mark in flavors. I also wish that dinner came with a drink, because you had to pay for a drink with your meal. But all-around an excellent experience in the magical town of Gora. Highly recommend.

The staff there was amazing, they were so kind and attentive to everyone and they truly gave great customer service. The rooms were also beautiful and very clean. The quality of this ryokan is well worth the price.
