Exploring the Van Gogh Museum is pretty straightforward, but knowing a few details ahead of time can make your trip even better. To help you feel prepared, we’ve noted down some important tips and house rules to remember before your visit.

    Food & drinks

For a tasty break during your visit, pop into the cafe in the atrium or the restaurant on the first floor. And take note that food and drinks are only allowed in these spots, not inside the museum or exhibition galleries.

    Photography

Visitors are welcome to take photos (without flash or fancy gear like tripods or selfie sticks). Just be mindful of other people and the artworks, and enjoy your photos for personal use only!

    Baggage

Keep your hands free and your belongings safe! Store your coat, handbags, small backpacks (up to 45×25×25 cm), and umbrella in the museum’s self-service lockers, which you can lock yourself using a personal numeric code. However, do keep in mind that larger luggage and strollers cannot be accommodated.

    Accessibility

The museum has tons of accessible facilities, including wheelchair access and elevators that reach every floor. Guide dogs are happily welcomed, and companions of visitors with disabilities can enjoy free entry too. Sign-language guided tours are available and can be reserved ahead of time, ensuring everyone can fully enjoy the experience.

    Kids activities

Children aged 6 to 12 are in for a treat with fun and engaging treasure hunts and workshops. There are also special audio tours tailored just for kids, making the visit both entertaining and educational as they explore the museum’s wonders.

    Best times to visit

If you want to experience the museum with fewer crowds, try coming in the early morning, as soon as the museum opens, or later in the afternoon.
Klook tip: Avoid visiting the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum on the same day. All the exhibits combined might be too overwhelming to fully appreciate.

    FAQs

Which is better: the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum?

It all boils down to what you’re interested in. The Van Gogh Museum is more intimate and focuses mostly on one artist, while the Rijksmuseum is huge and covers centuries of Dutch art and history.

Is Starry Night in the Van Gogh Museum?

No, The Starry Night is actually in New York at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
When Vincent died, his brother Theo inherited his remaining works. After Theo passed away, the collection went to Theo’s wife, Jo, and their son. She then sold “The Starry Night” to Georgette van Stolk in Rotterdam. Later, in 1941, the MoMA bought it from Georgette.

Is it worth visiting the Van Gogh Museum?

Definitely. Seeing Van Gogh’s works in person is an unforgettable experience.

Can you just walk in without a ticket?

Unfortunately, no. Tickets for Van Gogh Museum often sell out, so booking in advance is a must.

Do you have to book tickets in advance?

Yep! To secure your preferred time slot, buy tickets online ahead of time.

    Is there a dress code?

Nope! Just wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and you’re good to go. You can expect to walk around a lot throughout the whole museum.
