I always loved old locomotives and was thrilled to visit this museum, I was not disappointed ! They have many trains, old and relatively new, some of them have their control room open to the visit and they even offer a micro-trip with an old steam locomotive. If you are there at the end of the last trip, around 4PM, you will see the locomotive being put on a show before heading for the garage inside the museum. it’s a must see fornanyone loving trains or rmeven remotely interested in them, it’s interactive, shows everything related to the japan rail history and usage and is absolutely huge !
The place offers great fun & great learning knowledge even for young adults. Plenty of trains too see, plenty of interactive attractions & also information of the history of railway in Japan are there to learn about. However, do take in consideration that many of the information are in Japanese so need to QR for English Translation. That being said, for paid entrance fee it is still totally worth it & will be able to spend almost a day inside the premises to fully experience what is there to offer.
A must visit for train lovers! the museum is quite big, there is so much to see for young and old. There are older trains from the 30's up to 2000s. they have an outside area where they ride with steam locomotives, wich was very cool! There isn't much info in English but they tried.
It was a great time and everytime we thought there couldn't be more to see there was so much more and it was all fantastic. We easily spent 4 hours wandering through and could have spent another hour if we didn't have to leave for dinner plans.
There are many different types of trains. You can see how real coal-fired trains are loaded with coal, and there's also a steam train ride available for an additional ticket purchase. There's an outdoor playground for children, indoor toy trains, and a restaurant inside a train car—everything is very interesting.
I was very satisfied with this experience. The Kyoto Railway Museum is a Kyoto attraction that railway enthusiasts should definitely visit. It showcases a large number of Japanese trains and railway products from different periods and with different designs, along with detailed introductions (tickets, railway lunch boxes). You can also experience riding a steam train. The roundhouse has a rich and complete variety of trains. The museum exhibits offer many interactive games, including those that are educational and suitable for families, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Japan's railway culture. It's very interesting.
It's huge and so much fun! You can even experience a simulated railway. You could easily spend a whole day at this museum because there are so many different types of trains. There are indoor and outdoor sections, so there’s plenty to see. Remember to check the steam train schedule as soon as you enter. They also have a pretty fun playground indoors!
The flow is excellent, the facilities are very user-friendly, and the explanations are easy to understand, making it suitable for everyone from young children to seniors. If you explore thoroughly and include rest breaks, you can easily spend a whole day here.
