Guide
A 300-year-old frenzy and passion – unlock Osaka's strongest autumn folk festival!
Every September, Kishiwada City, Osaka, ushers in its most fervent moment of the year! The "Kishiwada Danjiri Festival," with over 300 years of history, originally began as an Inari festival to pray for a bountiful harvest. Today, it has become one of Japan's most representative and spectacular traditional festivals.
Several-ton, exquisitely crafted zelkova wood danjiri (floats) race through the streets, with approximately 500 pullers running alongside them, accompanied by shouts and the soaring sounds of music. The most thrilling part is the rapid turn, known as "Yarimawashi (cornering)," creating a breathtaking and extraordinarily lively scene!
As night falls, the daytime's exhilarating grandeur instantly transforms into elegance and romance. Thousands of red lanterns illuminate the danjiri, parading through the streets and alleys, sparkling with light, warm and mysterious. The contrast between movement and stillness creates a unique and unparalleled dual sensory experience.
