The route to the viewing area is a bit complex, so we recommend allowing extra time. The seats are reasonably comfortable and not too cramped. We purchased the 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM time slot, during which we got to fully enjoy the tram without any wait, and the event ended right on time at 5:00 PM. Afterward, lanterns are loaded onto the tram, and you can stay a bit later to enjoy the evening view.
Being able to comfortably watch the Float Festival without having to go early to secure a spot was really much more comfortable. However, there is no shade, so anyone planning to watch should remember to bring sun protection.
This is one of the rare 'bucket list' events, cannot overstate how epic this festival is. You need to get the full experience by arriving several hours early and walking around the neighborhood and see all the teams gathered to prepping and practicing. It is not that different from the Rose Bowl parade, both the good and bad. The sheer size of the crowd can make the event a nightmare, especially if you are not familiar with the neighborhood. Just like the Rose Bowl parade, you have to over PLAN to attend this event. The language barrier is a major issue in this area so plan on it. There are stands for the prime viewing area but they are pricy. Look at the online map to find a good corner to watch from but plan on being there hours ahead. If you plan on watching from the streets, plan on being there 3+ hours before the final event starts to secure a good viewing area. There are strategic corners where the teams have to pull like crazy to 'drift' the carts smoothly through the turns.
